Take Advantage of Alumni Audit

Who says your education has to stop when you graduate? Did you know that as an alum, you’re entitled to audit classes for only $100? It’s true, and it’s a benefit that hundreds of alumni take advantage of each year.

Through the Alumni Audit program, AU graduates can audit one nontutorial class per semester and one during the summer for $100 each (plus any special departmental fees) – for a total of three classes a year. There are a few requirements: The class must be open; you must be in good financial standing with the university (meaning any old parking tickets must be paid and all borrowed library books returned); you must obtain any necessary approvals; and you must register during the published registration periods.

The Alumni Audit program not only helps alumni to continue their education, it also supports an important scholarship program. Every time an alum pays the $100 per-class registration fee, $75 of it goes into the Alumni Scholarship fund (and that same $75 is tax-deductible). The Alumni Scholarship is awarded biennially to an incoming freshman or transfer student who is related to an AU alumnus/alumna, has a record of academic excellence, and has participated in leadership and community service activities. The scholarship dates back to the 1970’s and provides $5,000 a year toward tuition expenses for a maximum of four years.

Mark Stern, a rising sophomore from Montgomery, Alabama, is the 2004 recipient of the Alumni Scholarship. The younger brother of 2004 Class President, E.J. Stern, CAS/BA '04, Mark is president of the Class of 2007. Already, after only a year at AU, he has created the “Freshman Forum,” a program designed to help students get involved at the university. And this summer, he’s working in AU’s Ambassador’s Office, giving tours of the university to prospective students and visitors. The next Alumni Scholarship will be awarded in 2005.

Alumni Audit registration for Fall 2004 will begin on Monday, August 30, and last through Friday, September 10. (AU will be closed on Monday, September 6 for Labor Day.)
