| SOC Launches New Alumni Speaker Series
We’re very excited about this new series,” says Christi Boyes, assistant director of development for SOC. “It’s an opportunity for our star alumni to showcase their talents and for local alumni to network and reconnect.” The first SOC speaker series, in February, featured two-time Academy Award winner and AU-SOC artist-in-residence, Russell Williams, SOC/BA ’74. Earlier this month, FOX correspondent, Rick Leventhal, SOC/BA ’86, came down from New York to AU to discuss his experiences last year as an embedded journalist in Iraq. Plans have already been finalized for the third evening of dinner and discussion with seasoned television executive, Michael Cascio, SOC/BA ’73 on April 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Mary Graydon Center, (first floor, room 4). The topic of the evening will be: "TV's New Reality: Entertainment or News? Fact or Fiction? Great Taste or Less Filling?" Cascio, former executive vice president and general manager of Animal Planet, will lead an intimate discussion about television programming in 2004 and the impact of reality television. Prior to his work at Animal Planet, Cascio served as vice president of cable programming development for NBC News, the senior vice president of programming for A & E, director of documentary production for A & E, and executive producer and director of public affairs for the Capital Cities, ABC-owned WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. The exclusive new SOC Speaker Series is held each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Mary Graydon Center. Each dinner is limited to only 18 alumni and registration is held on a first-come, first-served basis. Upcoming speakers will differ from month to month and illustrate the various fields of communication that SOC alumni have entered. The cost for each dinner/discussion is $25 for paid SOC Alumni Chapter members and $35 for nonmembers. The School of International Service and the Kogod School of Business have been sponsoring speaker series for more than a year now, and the School of Public Affairs is in the process of planning a similar series.
