Young Alumni Kick Off Community Service Program

Last weekend, while many people were out seeing a matinee, shopping, or having lunch with friends, a group of young alumni took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer to make D.C. a better place.

On Saturday, March 20, the AU Young Alumni Chapter (YAC) spent the day at Martha’s Table, an organization dedicated to assisting low-income and homeless families in the Washington, D.C., area. Some of the alumni volunteers sorted clothing, while others prepared food, said David Vittal, SIS/BA ’02, YAC board member and volunteer organizer of the event.

“Everyone had a great time and we are hoping to organize another community service day soon,” added Vittal.

For more than a year, YAC has been expanding their programming, and community service has been something they wanted to tackle.

“Our focus now is to try to create events and programs that fill a variety of alumni needs,” said Laura Swanstrom Reece, CAS/MA ’02, and assistant director of Alumni Programs. “Community service is so central to the AU student experience that is was only natural for our young alums to want to continue this effort after graduation,”

Other programs YAC has sponsored recently include a financial planning seminar, a holiday party and silent auction, and various outings to see D.C,-based sports teams in conjunction with the Capital Alumni Network. YAC tickets are still available to see the Tony Award winning Broadway hit, “The Producers” at the Kennedy Center on June 29.

If you are interested in participating in community service days or other activities with the YAC, please contact Laura Swanstrom Reece at 202-885-5921.
