AU Alumni Update

May 2004

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear AU alum-

I’m not shy when it comes to telling people what a great place I think American University is. However, lately, it’s been other people telling ME about the accomplishments of AU. Since seeing the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings, American University has been a recurring topic of conversation among my colleagues. I am so excited people are recognizing the achievements of our alma mater.

Instead of my usual message, this month I just want to give you a list of reasons to be a proud AU alum. Remember, it’s OK to brag a little…
  • In the Princeton Review’s most recent edition, AU was rated one of the best values in college education in the U.S.
  • In the most recent edition of U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Public Affairs 10th in the nation of graduate level public affairs programs.
  • AU was the first university in D.C. to open a business school. Now named the Kogod School of Business, it opened in 1955.
  • CollegeProwler.com gives AU an A on Computing on Campus, Safety and Security, Local Atmosphere, and Nightlife and an A- for Academics, Housing, and Campus Dining.
  • American University is ranked in the Top 25 of large colleges and universities (more than 5,000 undergraduates) with the largest number of Peace Corps volunteers currently serving overseas.
  • AU’s Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre and the architectural firm that designed it, Einhorn, Yaffee, Prescott Architecture and Engineering (who also designed the Katzen Arts Center), were one of four 2003 D.C. chapter excellence award winners for interior architecture by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA described the Greenberg Theatre as “a delightful project,” with “a sophisticated palette [to] augment vivid red and gold tones with warm wood panels.”
  • Ten U.S. presidents have either served on the AU Board of Trustees or spoken on campus.
  • The applicant pool for the Class of 2008 was the largest (12,200 applications received) and most qualified in AU's history. The median for admitted students was a 3.5 grade point average and 1260 SAT.
  • This year's Senior Class Gift was the largest presented to the university in recent history. The Class of 2004 raised more than $60,000.
  • American University will be the first school designated to have a T-Mobile Hot Spot on campus. In a continued effort to make American University the nation's leading wireless university, members of the AU community will be able to stay connected on campus to the Internet, e-mail and other important information at wireless broadband speeds.

Sincerely,

Don Knapp ’81, ’83, ’87
AU Alumni Asociation President
