Eagles Reach Great Heights This Season
The AU athletics season has more than started off on the right foot this fall. From field hockey to volleyball to soccer, many of AU’s teams have reached amazing heights in recent weeks. These successful students who give so much time to athletics will travel around the country to compete in the NCAA and Patriot League championships in the month ahead. The field hockey team finished its season with a 19-3 record. Winning the Patriot League Tournament earlier this month with a 3-0 win over Colgate, the Eagles earned their second consecutive NCAA appearance, where they fell to Maryland on Nov. 13 in the second round of the tournament. However, five AU field hockey players were named to the impressive National Field Hockey Coaches Association First and Second All-Region teams for the Mid-Atlantic. On the volleyball court, the AU women completed their fourth consecutive undefeated season in the Patriot League, defeating Army in Bender Arena for their 64th straight PL win and fourth consecutive league title! In front of close to 1,000 fans - and on national television - AU dominated the match from start to finish. The men’s soccer team holds a 12-5-1 record, and with their recent 3-2 win over Lafayette, they also hold the Patriot League regular season title, their first ever. On November 12, the Eagles beat Lehigh in a narrow 1-0 victory to capture the Patriot League Championship title. Right now, the Eagles are ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region. They beat Long Island University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 20, on Reeves Field and now advance to round two, which will be held in Charlottesville, Va., on Tuesday, Nov. 23 against the Virginia Cavaliers. In upcoming events, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are gearing up for very exciting seasons. Patriot League play opens on Jan. 8 for the men against Lehigh. The Patriot League Tournament culminates the season on March 4-11 at the highest seed’s home court. The women’s basketball team opened their season in Bender Arena on Nov. 13 in an exhibition game against Team Concept. They beat William & Mary 75 to 59 in their second game of the season on Nov. 21 - the first win for new coach, Melissa McFerrin. The Eagles will host Mount Saint Mary's in Bender Arena on Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. For complete schedules and other information about AU Athletics, visit: http://aueagles.collegesports.com/ To purchase season tickets to AU Basketball games, visit: http://www.collegesports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/amer/genrel/auto_pdf/MBB-WBB_Season_Order_Form -Ashley Ferrell ‘07 |
