Katzen Arts Center Progress Continues

The Katzen Arts Center won’t officially open its doors 'til 2005, but its construction and planning continue to progress as the end of 2004 nears.

“They’re heavily into construction of the interior,” says Jerry Gager, director of AU’s Facilities Planning and Development. The walls, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are fully engaged indoors, the windows are being finalized, and you can see the glass going in and the trim around the windows,” he adds.

The next big item to be installed will be the elevators, says Gager. There will be two passenger elevators in the instructional wing to take people to and from the underground parking garage, plus a third freight-size elevator in the gallery for bringing in artworks and large pieces. “They’ll be in place before the end of the year,” he notes.

On the exterior of the building, the limestone is about 75 percent installed. Construction of the terrace will begin in late November and continue through the end of the year. “By the beginning of April we’ll wrap up the major part of the construction,” says Gager.

In addition to the obvious signs of the project moving ahead, much is happening behind the scenes as well. Last month, members of the University Relations staff conducted a series of focus groups in efforts to most appropriately brand and market the center. A total of six groups including AU alumni, students, faculty, staff, local arts community members, and neighbors were interviewed about their perceptions of the arts at AU and in D.C., their expectations for the new facility, and their hopes for future events there. Their feedback is being taken into account as university members plan the branding, programming, and inaugural events.

Next time you're driving by campus, be sure to check out the building on the corner of Mass and Nebraska Avenues. And stay tuned for more updates in the months to follow. Hard hat tours of the building are available upon request. To set up a tour, contact Kim Counes in the CAS Dean's office for more information at 202-885-2446 or Kim Counes.
