February 2005

Get out the popcorn and candy, movie lovers, it’s Oscar time. To celebrate, we decided to call Washington Post film critic Desson Thomson '80 this month to get his take on the reviewer's life, his favorite flicks this year, and the movie biz in general.

If that's not enough entertainment news, mark your calendars for the latest AU student production, "Our Country's Good" at the Greenberg Theatre in March, and SOC’s second annual “Reel” Journalism Film Festival on campus in April.

Speaking of double features, AU administrators announced this month that students can now download movies and music legally using a new service. Whether you're in the movie business, public service, international relations, or any of the zillion other careers AU alums choose, be sure to check out the Alumni Directory in the works so you can find out what all your peers are up to.

I hope you're finding ways to stay entertained wherever you call home.

All the best-
-Melissa Reichley
Editor, Alumni Update

P.S. Congratulations to SOC adjunct professor, Gerry Wurzburg, and alums Gary Griffin, CAS/BA '77, Barbara Ballow, SOC/BA '79, and Elissa Ewalt, SOC/MA '97, for their Academy Award nomination for their documentary short, Autism is a World. We're so proud of you!
