Groups of alumni in London and Paris got an unusual treat in the last week when AU President Benjamin Ladner visited Europe to share the latest news about AU.

Beginning in London, Dr. and Mrs. Ladner, along with University Relations Vice President Al Checcio and Senior Director Tracey Vranich met with London alumni, study abroad students, and friends at the Institute of Directors last Tuesday. Midway through the evening of catching up and networking, Dr. Ladner announced that AU recently reached the halfway mark of $100 million toward the $200 million AnewAU goal. He described for alums the many changes taking place on campus, including the Katzen Arts Center nearing completion, and the progress on pre-construction plans for the new School of International Service building and renovations to the McKinley Building which will transform it into the new home for the School of Communication.

“It was an honor to receive Dr. and Mrs. Ladner in London,” said Graham Young, CAS/BA ’67, the newly appointed London Alumni Chapter leader. “It was very exiting to embrace Dr. Ladner’s ideals of a global university. By participating in a strategic campaign to extend American University to all nations, students of all academic interests will gain a greater understanding,” said Young.

Al Checcio shared much of the same news with a smaller group of alumni who live in and around Brussels, and gathered at La Maison du Cygne for an intimate dinner and discussion, while Dr. Ladner visited AU’s partner university in the United Arab Emirates, American University of Sharjah.

In Paris, m ore than 35 alumni and AU Abroad students met one another – and Dr. and Mrs. Ladner - at France-Amerique, a club where a previous AU event was held last November for ex-Pats from various colleges and universities to share Thanksgiving. "The AU Paris Chapter was so pleased to welcome President Ladner to Paris,” said Edouard Gueudet, WCL/LLM '02, president of AU’s Paris Alumni Chapter since last October. “All of us are committed to strengthen AU's network in France in the most dynamic way, and the presence of President Ladner and his team was a great encouragement."
