Baltimore Alumni Chapter Spends Day at the Races

Baltimore alumni at PimlicoMore than a dozen AU alums who live in or around Baltimore got together in June for a Day at the Races. The event featured a trip to Pimlico Race Course, where area alumni cheered for their favorite horses and caught up on the latest gossip with each other.

“We had a terrific day,” said Baltimore chapter leader Rina Pennacchia. “The weather was terrific and everyone had a good time.”

An unexpected twist brought even more smiles to those attending, explains Pennacchia.

The fourth race was billed the American University race. The winning horse was named "Blown Audit," and its owner is John Tsipanitis, explains Pennacchia. As the alumni group assembled in the winner's circle with their AU banner prominently displayed, the horse’s owner walked up and asked if the group was from American University. Upon telling him yes, he told the group he was a donor to the university and a big fan of AU. “I invited him to join us for the group photo. He was tickled and thanked me,” said Pennacchia.

The next Baltimore chapter event is scheduled for Sunday, September 25, the O's vs. the Red Sox. To see all the AU alumni events scheduled for the coming months in cities across the country, visit: http://alumni.american.edu/events
