Fall Performing Arts Schedule Promises Double the Entertainment

The fall 2005 performance schedule has been released, and the months ahead should prove doubly entertaining with the 200-seat Katzen Arts Center Abramson Family Recital Hall opening in addition to the 300-seat Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre at 4200 Wisconsin Avenue.

Tickets will be made available as showdates near, but in the meantime, mark your calendar!

Students will star in a variety of shows at the Greenberg Theatre this season, including:

  • "PERF 101"
    September 23, 8:00 p.m. and September 24, 2:00 p.m.
    Showcasing incoming department majors and minors
    Written by Caleen Sinnette Jennings, Music by Keith Tittermary, Directed by Cara Gabriel.
  • Into the Woods
    October 1, 7:00 p.m., open house rehearsal
    October 21–22, 27–29, 8:00 p.m.
    DPA General Education night, October 19, 8:00 p.m.
    High School Matinee, October 26, 10:30 a.m. October 4, 4:00 p.m.
    An ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood, a Prince Charming with a roving eye, and a witch who raps are among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale, directed by Carl Menninger. Book by James Lapine, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
  • Dance Choreolabs
    November 15-16, 8:00 p.m.
    Faculty and student works in progress. Directed by Rob Esposito.
  • Dance Informal Showing
    December 11, 5:00 p.m.
    Informal performances from the dance program's dynamic classes.

    October 14, 8:00 p.m. - Abramson Family Recital Hall
    Chamber works by AU Faculty Composers Paul Oehlers, Haig Mardirosian, Jerzy Sapieyevski, Randall Packer, and Fernando Benadon.
  • The Magic of Mozart: An Evening of Chamber Music with Solo Piano to Celebrate the Opening of the Katzen Recital Hall
    November 4, 8:00 p.m. - Abramson Family Recital Hall
    American University musicians-in-residence and Department of Performing Arts faculty present the works of Mozart.
  • "Art Inspired by Art" - AU Chamber Singers Concert
    November 5, 8:00 p.m. - Abramson Family Recital Hall
    November 6, 3:00 p.m.
    A program of choral music inspired by the other arts. Hear how other creative works in the visual arts, literature, dance, and theatre have provided the impulse for composers for the human voice. Several new works will be performed. Conducted by Daniel Abraham.
  • New Plays Workshop Series 1- A Pocket Full of Grace
    November 11-12, 8:00 p.m. - Studio Theatre
    A new musical about a young pick-pocket, cowritten by AU faculty member Carl Menninger. Presented in conjunction with Ford’s Theatre, the musical will first be read at the Katzen Arts Center, followed by readings at Ford’s Theatre. Written by William Hopkins and Carl Menninger.
  • Haydn: The Creation - AU Chorus and Symphony Orchestra Concert
    December 2-3, 8:00 p.m. - Abramson Family Recital Hall
    December 4, 3:00 p.m.
    One of the greatest oratorios of all time, Haydn's The Creation presents a vivid portrait of the seven days of Creation depicted in the Bible and Milton 's Paradise Lost. Conducted by Jesus Manuel Berard, Choral and vocal preparation by Daniel Abraham

  • Wish Eye New
    December 7, 7:30 p.m., open dress rehearsal (AU Community) - Studio Theatre
    December 8, 10:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
    December 9, 10:30 a.m.
    December 10, 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
    Three college students journey back in time through the magic Wish Eye. They relive childhood fun with toys, family trips, and favorite relatives, but they discover that growing up is lots of fun too. Written by Caleen Sinnette Jennings, Directed by Tim Reagan.
  • AU Jazz Ensemble Concert
    December 9-10, 8:00 p.m. - Abramson Family Recital Hall
    An evening of Duke Ellington in collaboration with Duke Ellington School for the Arts
    AU Jazz Ensemble Directed by William Smith.
    Duke Ellington Jazz Ensemble Directed by Davey Yarborough.
