Another Great Reason to Plan Student Send-Offs...You Never Know Who You'll Meet

Not everyone meets their college sweetheart during those four magical student years. For Emily Feinzig, KSB/MBA ’93, and Scott Schwartz, SPA/BA ’88, a “college romance” started years after their own graduations, as they were helping plan a summer send-off for a new generation of AU students in 1997.

“I was interested in getting involved with the alumni association and helping plan the summer send-off as a way to stay in touch with AU and an opportunity to meet new friends," says Feinzig. "Little did I know I would meet Scott."

Schwartz had similar motivations. “I felt it was a great way to give back to AU and to relive my own memories as a freshman in 1984.”

Six years of marriage and two children later, Schwartz and Feinzig are just as excited to host this year’s incoming freshmen in their Philadelphia home on Saturday, August 6. It will be the second send-off they have hosted in their home, and the third they have organized.

“The summer send-off has a very special meaning for us both in terms of our commitment and support of AU. Scott loves to tell the students’ parents the story of how we met,” says Feinzig.

Schwartz and Feinzig aren’t the only ones eager to welcome new students and their families into the AU community. Summer send-offs are being hosted in Atlanta; Boston; Cleveland; Houston; Kansas City; Los Angeles; Long Island; Miami; Pittsburgh; San Diego; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Seattle; St. Louis; and Woodbury, N.J. These events will range from an ice cream social at a local scoop shop to a pool party at an alum’s home.

“We are constantly impressed by the generosity of our alumni and parent volunteers who host these events for our incoming students," says Anne Singer, assistant director of admissions at AU. "In addition to the many volunteers who have been hosting events for several years now, we are also increasing our outreach - with a first-time program in Puerto Rico this summer,” she adds.
