Alumni Board Makes Connections with Board of Trustees The executive committee of the Alumni Board met in mid-February to discuss the importance of governance issues and develop a proposal outlining the most effective ways for the Alumni Board and the Board of Trustees (BoT) to work together. “We realized that the best way for us to serve the Board of Trustees and our alumni all over the world is to serve as a pulse point that reflects back from the field, and voices the point of view of our alumni. We are a vital, two-way communications link with the entire alumni community,” said Carey Earle, SOC/BA '88, president of the Alumni Board. Earle presented the Alumni Board's plan at the general session of the Board of Trustees meeting on February 17. The plan includes a call to increase communication with alumni, to create a voting seat on the Board of Trustees that would better represent the general alumni population, to invite a member of the Board of Trustees member to sit on the Alumni Board, and to increase the opportunities for Alumni Board members to sit on Board of Trustee committees.
Prior to the Feb. 17 meeting, the BoT's Executive Committee approved a recommendation to expand the number of board committees that include nonvoting campus representation (during a committee meeting's general session). With that approval, the Alumni Board sent representatives to the general sessions of the Campus Life Committee, Finance and Investment Committee, International Affairs Committee, and Campaign Steering and Development Committee. “My experience with the Campaign Steering and Development Committee was very positive. I was there for the complete meeting and had ample opportunity to participate and ask questions,” said Jonah Gitlitz, KSB/BS '55, member at large of the Alumni Board. The executive committee of the Alumni Board will hold their next meeting in summer 2006. -Mary Mazzuca
