YAC Board Seeks New Members, Leaders

The Young Alumni Chapter (YAC) is looking for new members to lead the chapter in the years ahead. Current officers hosted a reception at Drinx bar and restaurant near the MCI Center on February 9 to discuss the chapter's future.

Alumni who graduated in the last 10 years had the opportunity to meet current board members and speak with them about their experiences as the backbone of YAC. The evening gave current officers a chance to meet potential new officers prior to reviewing applications for board membership and/or officer positions.

While the current YAC board stands strong at 18 members for its 3,900 constituents in the D.C. metropolitan area, current YAC leaders acknowledge that after two years of service the time has come to bring in some new alumni who can offer fresh ideas. “Bringing in new people every year is important to us because we’re constantly striving to have fresh and interesting events and increase the number of people we reach,” says current YAC President Ashley Philips, SOC/BA ‘02, SOC/MA ‘03.

YAC officers decided to host this happy hour leadership recruitment event because they felt it was important for those interested in board membership to gain a more personal introduction, as well as a clearer understanding of the chapter’s inner workings from those with personal experience. All officers introduced themselves, explained their job responsibilities, and shared their favorite aspects of involvement in YAC. “What makes being a part of YAC and the board so great is that it allows you to reconnect with AU and the friends you made there,” says Secretary Rachel Tabakman, SPA/BA ’03. “It also allows you to network and make additional friendships and connections.”

“Everyone at the event, everyone in the room, had a connection to AU, and that’s something special,” says Tabakman, who hopes the other attendees recognize what a unique opportunity involvement in YAC provides.

“It was great to catch up with AU people I hadn’t seen in a while, and it was fun to realize how many friends we all had in common,” says Lisa Davis, SPA-SOC/BA ’05.

YAC makes reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones easy. The chapter sponsors events—ranging from cultural programs to sports games, community service to social activities—that strive to take advantage of the unique D.C. locale and enhance the educational, cultural, social, and professional lives of young alumni. Recent events have included a self-defense seminar; a Wizards game; and the Snowflake Shindig; the chapter’s annual holiday party and silent auction. A group of young alumni attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure on February 17 at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre.

Applications for YAC board and officer positions were due at the end of February. New members and officers will be announced by the end of March. For more information on how to get involved with YAC, please contact Tara Sherwin at sherwin@american.edu or 202-885-5921.
