August 2007
Last month, Dr. Neil Kerwin became the first AU alumnus to be elevated to the position of president of American University. It’s a wonderful personal story. But more importantly, it’s a fantastic story for AU.
Neil Kerwin came to AU in 1967. He met his wife, Ann, shortly thereafter, and he became a proud alumnus in 1971. Over the next three decades, he has served the AU community as professor, dean, provost, and interim president.
The best part of this story is not that an AU alum is now leading our school. Rather, it’s that this particular alum is now our president. Having worked with him in the last year, I can say from first-hand experience that his passion, commitment, and dedication to AU are unrivaled. When you mix those qualities with his unassuming demeanor and his impeccable sense of honesty and ethics, we have a leader who can and will take AU to the next level.
I hope you are as proud as I am to have Dr. Kerwin lead our alma mater into the 21st century, and that you’ll join me in wishing him heartfelt congratulations. Perhaps more importantly, I hope you’ll take this time to re-engage with and rededicate yourself to AU.
It really is AnewAU these days!
Sincerely,
Brian F. Keane, SPA/BA '89
