December 2007
In 1963 President Kennedy spoke at American University and delivered what became known as one of his most oft quoted speeches. “For in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's futures. And we are all mortal.”
In that commencement speech he was speaking about his proposed nuclear test ban treaty. But he could just have easily been speaking about a cause to which AU has become a true global leader – preserving our environment and addressing global climate change.
Last month’s ground-breaking ceremony for the new School of International Service building embodies this effort. It will become a beacon in D.C. and the nation, not just for international service, but also for sustainability and leading by example. As President Kennedy said, “We all breath the same air."
I hope you’ll join me in looking ahead to 2008 with excitement about the many new opportunities that lie ahead for AU as we alumni continue demonstrating in our communities that AU is an institution that breeds leaders.
Best wishes for a happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Brian F. Keane, SPA-SOC/BA '89
P.S. President Kerwin’s official inauguration ceremony has been scheduled for Friday, February 8 at 11 a.m. in Bender Arena. Be sure to read the January issue of Alumni Update for more details.
