Save the Date for Alumni Weekend 2007 When was the last time you saw your best friends from college, came back to campus, or bought yourself a new AU sweatshirt, T-shirt, or hat in the Campus Store? October is still a few months away, but alumni volunteers from reunion years and Alumni Programs staff are already making plans for Alumni Weekend 2007, October 26-28. With luncheons and barbeques, tours and sporting events, class reunion parties and political speakers, there’s a little something for everyone.
This year’s special all-alumni Saturday evening event, “Port and Politics,” (AKA wine and “cheese”!) will feature a cocktail reception on campus in the Butler Boardroom, hosted by AU Alumni Association President Brian Keane, SPA/BA ’89. Keane will have the honor of bestowing the 2007 Alumni Awards on the special recipients. But that’s just half the fun. Immediately following the reception, alumni are invited to Bender Arena for a special presentation, cosponsored by the Kennedy Political Union (KPU) speaker’s bureau, featuring White House correspondents, Helen Thomas and David Gregory, SIS/BA ’92. Their discussion, “From Kennedy to Bush: Covering the White House from the Front Row,” will be moderated by School of Communication Professor Lenny Steinhorn and promises to be an entertaining and intellectually stimulating finish to a full day of activities. The always-popular AU Picnic will be held earlier in the day on Saturday, Oct. 27. This is the perfect time for AU alumni, current students, and their families to mix and mingle over a delicious gourmet barbeque of hotdogs, barbecued chicken, vegetarian chili, cole slaw, potato salad, apple bread pudding, and more. With live music and games for the kids, this great event for singles and families alike is a great place to meet up and plan out the rest of the weekends together with old friends. We’ll have specially designated areas for “big reunion year” alumni from the classes of 1982, 1987, 1997, and 2002 to find each other at the picnic, too. If you’re one of the thousands of alumni who graduated in 1982, 1987, 1997, or 2002, you won’t want to miss the private party planned for your milestone reunion class on Friday night, Oct. 26. The classes of 1982 and 1987 will share a joint reception honoring their 25th and 20th reunions, respectively, at the National Press Club in downtown D.C. Graduates from 1997 will have their own party at Gordon Biersch Brewery in the happening Gallery Place-Chinatown area of the city, and the Class of 2002 will celebrate its five-year reunion at Ireland’s Four Fields (formerly known as the 4Ps) in Cleveland Park. Last but not least, we would be remiss if we forget the venerable Golden Eagles -- alumni who share the distinction of having graduated 50 or more years ago from AU. This year, alumni from the Class of 1957 and earlier will be honored on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Golden Eagle Luncheon, held on the stage of the Abramson Family Recital Hall in the beautiful Katzen Arts Center. Attendees will walk down memory lane, be treated to a live student performance, and get a special tour of the latest exhibits at the American University Museum. These events are just a few of the highlights of Alumni Weekend 2007. Mark your calendar and contact your friends now to plan on coming back. You won’t want to miss it! -Tara Sherwin | |||||
