November 2007
It was one of the best ever. Alumni Weekend 2007 was an incredible success. More than 500 alumni came back to campus to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. If you couldn’t attend, then the only thing missing was you.
For me, the highlight of the weekend was the “Port and Politics” reception on Saturday night, where our 2007 alumni awards were presented. The Rising Star Award was given to Ken Biberaj ’02. Ken has done some incredible work in politics and business since his graduation and is well deserving of this unique award. AU trustee and 2006 Rising Star awardee, Neal Sharma '98, kicked off a new tradition by toasting Ken, beginning what we hope to be a new tradition of the previous award winner handing it to the new Rising Star. Boston native and CEO of the New England Council, James Brett ’73, was bestowed the Alumni Recognition award for his years of leadership in the community.
Following the reception, I had the pleasure of introducing NBC’s Chief White House Correspondent, David Gregory ’92, and “the dean of the White House Press Corps,” Helen Thomas, at a Kennedy Political Union program: “From Kennedy to Bush: Covering the White House From the Front Row,” cosponsored by Alumni Programs and the Alumni Board. More than 1,800 alumni, students, and their parents filled Bender Arena to hear the insights of Thomas and Gregory – and gave the speakers a standing ovation when the discussion finished.
Alumni Weekend just keeps getting better and better. So plan on joining us next year. And in the meantime, don’t be a stranger. President Kerwin will be traveling across the country to meet with alumni and friends in the coming months; I hope you’ll be able to go and meet him when he comes to your city.
Sincerely,
Brian F. Keane, SPA-SOC/BA '89
