Leadership Connections Workshops

Leadership Connections is facilitated by Student Activities and provides access to educational tools that can provide you with the knowledge and resources you need to be a successful student leader or to make your organization a success.

For Student Activities' workshops, each individual student attending the workshop must pre-register. If you are interested in completing Student Activities 101 or Financial 101 through Blackboard, view the Quick Links on this page.


Online workshops available

Student Activities 101, Financial 101 and New Organization Recognition can now be completed online through Blackboard! Email leader@american.edu to be registered for the course. Note:  Additions to Blackboard are processed each Monday so please be patient for a response.

Student Activities 101

Required for at least one member of every student organization, Student Activities 101 will provide the steps to successfully plan an event, how to use the online space request, the benefits of being a Student Activities recognized organization, and provide a broad overview of the policies and procedures that may come into play when planning programs and events both on and off campus.

Financial 101

Required for at least the President and Treasurer of every Student Activities organization for signature authority on financial paperwork through Student Activities. Join the Student Activities Assistant Director of Administration and Budget and the Financial Administrator for information on the University policies and procedures for financial management as well as the various financial forms you will use for transactions through our office. Also available as a course on Blackboard!

Financial 102

This workshop is an option for returning student leaders who have attended Financial 101 in the past academic year and/or leaders of social Greek organizations.  We will offer a brief review of financial forms and procedures, keep you informed of any updates or changes that may have occurred and provide you with tips and tricks for the financial success of your organization.

Student Activities 102

This workshop is an option for returning student leaders who have attended Student Activities 101 in the past academic year.  We will offer a brief review of key policies and procedures, keep you informed of any updates or changes that may have occurred and provide you with tips and tricks for the success of your organization.

Greek 101

This workshop is designed to help new members understand the values and purpose of fraternity and sorority life. The program helps students to understand university support and policies in regard to fraternity and sorority membership in addition to being educated on topics including hazing, alcohol & other drugs, leadership development opportunities, and time management.

New Organization Recognition Information Session

In this session, new student organizations will learn how to apply for recognition, collect the appropriate materials, gain a greater understanding of the Student Activities office, and the budget process (if applicable).  Whether you are forming a new club, media organization, coalition or social fraternity/sorority, a representative must attend one of these sessions before applying to be recognized.  NOTE:  This session is not required if you are re-newing an organization that was recognized within the past two academic years.

Trans 101

The Trans 101 training will provide faculty, staff, and students with information and tools to work with transgender people including a review of gender/gender identity/gender expression, an overview of current issues facing the trans community, and effective ally behaviors

Yup, no way around it. You have got to talk to this person. You know that text is not the best way, but how DO you bring up the elephant in the room? This workshop focuses on how to begin a conversation about conflict and how to manage the difficult aspects of these discussions.

Building A Relationship With Your Advisor(s)

Have an advisor you don't know? Not sure what you advisors purpose is with your organization? Looking to get your advisor more involved? This workshop will help your organization understand the important role your advisor has with the organization and how to build a strong relationship with them to help the organization grow.

Effectively Managing Your Organization

Many organizations operate without knowledge of their governing documents or with documents that have been unedited for years. Changes in leadership or a shift in the management style of individuals in leadership roles can also cause for both internal conflicts and issues with other student organizations.  This workshop will explore methods to more effectively manage your organization, its executive board and members, as well as how to effectively transition to new leadership each year.

Collaborative Programming Around Intersecting Identities

This workshop will consist of discussions around what collaborative programming is, why it is important, and the process of collaborative programming. Participants will learn about strategies and tips for collaborating with student organizations, as well as faculty and staffs, on programs that relate to identity.

Bringing Balance to Your Organization’s Funds

This workshop will aim to help student leaders make conscious decisions on essential and nonessential purchases. We will also discuss planning effectively for events in anticipation of necessary financial resources.  Organizations will also receive suggestions on how to best transition financial signature authorities (i.e. treasurers and presidents).

Contracts and Agreements

This workshop will aid student leaders in understanding contract operations at American University. In the workshop we will be going over different types of contracts; supplemental information that is often needed, and many other areas pertinent to successfully navigating policies and laws. If you are an organization that works with and/or pays external or internal entities, this workshop is for you!

Safe Space Sticker Program

This program seeks to create a safer and more inclusive campus environment for all members of the campus community by reducing heterosexism, homophobia, and transphobia.  By successfully completing this training program, you are helping to create a visible and supportive network of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and ally members of the campus community.
