Why Go Greek?
American University has a 75-year tradition of Greek Life that continues to strengthen and grow. As a new or prospective student, you might think, “How can I possibly have time to join a fraternity or sorority? I’m just trying to adjust to being in college in the first place!” One of the greatest benefits of joining a Greek organization is the instant bond you make with your new brothers or sisters who stood in your shoes not long before you.
Some students may say: “Why join a Greek organization to pay for your friends?” To which I always reply, “Greek membership is so much more than that!” If you find the sorority or fraternity that feels like home, you will begin a lifelong journey of sisterhood or brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, networking, and social development. For most students, their organization provides them with that warm, fuzzy, “home away from home” feeling. The bonds begin right away as you meet with your new member class, experience your first ritual, and are paired with a big sister or brother to guide you through the process. You may be able to experience a “sneak peek” of a chapter ritual during recruitment, intake, or Bid Day.
Sorority and fraternity members hold their commitment to education in high regard by scheduling study nights, providing local and national scholarships, maintaining files of information from classes, pairing you with study buddies, rewarding outstanding academic performance, and providing scholastic assistance when needed. American University Greeks consistently have an average GPA above the All-Women’s, All-Men’s, and All-University averages.
Philanthropy is another source of pride for all Greeks at American University. Each organization supports a national or local philanthropy by hosting large and small scale events as fundraisers or to spread awareness for a particular cause. They also encourage and reward volunteering on campus and in the local community. With 27 Greek organizations/colonies/interest groups on campus, there are plenty of opportunities to donate, volunteer, and have fun for a good cause!
Leadership opportunities will also begin right away. In most chapters, new members are expected to serve on various committees or hold junior offices. New members are encouraged to pay attention during chapter meetings and activities, then decide which area interests them most as there are leadership positions in every chapter for nearly every interest. Remember, sorority or fraternity membership means you already are a leader!
Greek organization membership is a privilege but it is also a responsibility. Members must always strive to represent the values of their chapter and their national organization. Since 1824, hundreds of thousands of men and women have made the commitment to experience Greek life. These members provide an extensive network which is an advantage when seeking internships and jobs. Alumni organizations provide mentors for young members and enable members to continue to connect with sisters and brothers no matter where in the world you go after college.
Please know that there are resources available for you as you begin this process as well as in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Student Activities office at 202-885-3390 or email greeklife@american.edu. We hope you decide to Go Greek!
