"The Making of Southeast Asia" Book Talk with Dr. Amitav Acharya (Updated 1/17/14)
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Thursday, January 30 (2014), Abramson Family Founders Room, SIS Building
Comparative and Regional Studies Professor Amitav Acharya will discuss his most recent publication, "The Making of Southeast Asia: International Relations of a Region" (Cornell University Press, 2012). In this new edition of a book first published as The Quest for Identity in 2000, Acharya updates developments in the region through the first decade of the new century: the aftermath of the financial crisis of 1997, security affairs after September 2001, the long-term impact of the 2004 tsunami, and the substantial changes wrought by the rise of China as a regional and global actor. Acharya argues in this important book for the crucial importance of regionalism in a different part of the world.
Special guest speaker Dr. Jurgen Haacke of the London School of Economics will provide opening commentary. This event is hosted by the Comparative and Regional Studies Program, and co-sponsored by the Global Governance, Politics, and Security Program and the ASEAN Center at SIS. A book signing and reception will follow the talk (books will be available for purchase). The event is free and open to the public.
