Events Calendar

Here is a listing of annual events that occur at AU. For student organization events and an event calendar, please go log on to the S.O.N. Network.

Welcome Weeks – The week immediately before classes start and the first week of classes. Many events are hosted during these two weeks to welcome student to campus. Some events include Pick Your Flick Movie Night in the Amphitheater and the Student Involvement Fair.


Hispanic Heritage Month – This month starts in mid-September and goes through mid-October and typically includes music, lectures, cultural activities and parties to celebrate Hispanic culture. These events are coordinated by the Latino & American Student Organization (LASO) in conjunction with Multicultural Affairs.


Artemas Ward – Typically held in late September / early October, this event celebrates Artemas Ward, for whom Ward Circle and Ward Circle Building are named and includes a host of activities, including a carnival on the quad and various events throughout the week.


National Coming Out Week – This early October week is co-sponsored by AU Queers & Allies and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Ally Resource Center. Numerous social and educational events are held for all AU community members.


Family Weekend – This late October weekend invites families to campus to visit their students. Many events are hosted this weekend, including theater and dance performances, a KPU lecture and special TDR meals.


Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration – This annual January event celebrates Dr. King, typically through music, song and lectures. Past events have also included community service activities.


Black History Month – During February, AU celebrates black history with lectures, musical celebrations, parties and other events. Events are typically sponsored by the Black History Month Committee in conjunction with Multicultural Affairs.


Founders’ Day Ball – This late February event sponsored by the Student Government celebrates the founding of the university with an off-campus semi-formal ball, usually held at a famous DC landmark. Past sites include the Old Post Office Pavilion, Union Station, the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the Mayflower Hotel.


SG Elections – The SG Spring elections are held in early April. These elections select the SG Executives, school and class council officers for the upcoming year.


Asian Pacific Heritage Month – Held in April, this month-long celebration often includes music, lectures, performances and food from several different Asian cultures. The Asian-Pacific Awareness Committee, in conjunction with Multicultural Affairs, coordinates this month’s activities.


Spring Fling – Typically held in mid to late April. This week usually includes a carnival on the Quad and other festivities.
