Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered below, please contact the testing office at 202-885-3489 or exams@american.edu.

Students who have registered a disability with the ASAC and for whom testing accommodations have been approved may take their exams at the ASAC. If you have not yet documented your disability with the ASAC, you will need to go through the three-step process to determine if testing accommodations are appropriate for you.

Students must submit a request for every quiz, test, or exam they plan to take at the ASAC. The test request form is filled out and submitted online. After you submit the online form, you should receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation, then the request did not go through and needs to be submitted again. For more information on submitting an online test request, view the video above.

If possible, request to start the exam earlier than the class's scheduled start time. If that is not possible, request to take the exam at a different time of day that works for you. If you do this, we strongly advise you to write a note to your instructor in the appropriate field of the test request form, explaining why you need to take the test at the requested time. The testing office is open to administer tests the following hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Wednesday: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Friday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

For tests to be taken by the last day of classes, requests must be submitted at least one week (7 days) in advance of the scheduled exam date. All requests submitted by the deadline are guaranteed a seat for their requested date and time.

Late requests must be made in person at the testing office and are filled on a space-available basis.

The late test request process adheres to the following deadlines:

  • If a test is on a Monday, the student must fill out a late request by 5pm on the previous Wednesday.

  • If a test is on a Tuesday, the student must fill out a late request by 5pm on the previous Thursday.

  • If a test is on a Wednesday, the student must fill out a late request by 5pm on the previous Friday.

  • If a test is on a Thursday, the student must fill out a late request by 5pm on the previous Monday.

  • If a test is on a Friday, the student must fill out a late request by 5pm on the previous Tuesday.

First, ask your instructor if they are able to accommodate you in class. Most instructors are willing to provide extended time in the classroom. If not, ask your instructor if you may take the exam at the ASAC later in the week.

Final exam requests are due earlier than regular semester test requests--typically three weeks before the first day of finals. The exact deadline will be communicated to you via email and on the ASAC website each semester. There is a late request process for final exams; however, students must wait until all of the on-time requests have been processed before submitting late requests. Just as during the rest of the semester, your preferred date and time are not guaranteed for late requests. Late requests are filled on a space available basis

Please report to the ASAC testing office in Mary Graydon Center, room 243 about 5 minutes before your scheduled start time. Students who arrive more than 15 minutes late may be unable to take the exam as scheduled.

Students may bring pens, pencils, and any other materials the instructor has explicitly approved. Students may also bring beverages with lids, quiet snacks, and medications into the testing rooms. No cells phones are permitted in the testing rooms.

The instructor should indicate which materials are permitted for the exam on the test request form. Students receive an email after the instructor has taken action on the form that will indicate the approved materials and other important information. Be sure to review these emails every time.

If you are scheduled to use a computer for your exam, the ASAC will provide it. Our computers have the Microsoft Office suite of programs and assistive technology, including Kurzweil, Dragon, and JAWS. If any other software is required, please contact the testing office to confirm its availability.

We disable the internet unless the professor has indicated that it is necessary for the exam.

If you would like to use your own computer for the exam, your instructor must approve it by notifying the testing office directly.

To make any changes to your test request, please contact the ASAC testing office by emailing exams@american.edu or by calling 202-885-3489. Your instructor will have to agree to any changes.
