Tutor Information

Tutoring Services peer tutors include both undergraduate and graduate students from every school and collectively offer tutoring in over 39 subject areas. From Farsi, to finance, to physics, peer tutors share their knowledge and passion for their subject with other students.

The Application Process

Students interested in tutoring should apply to the Academic Support Center's Tutoring Services. Applications can be printed from this Web page and submitted to the ASC in Mary Graydon Center, room 243 or e-mailed to tutoring@american.edu. Eligible students must have earned a grade of A or A- in the courses for which they wish to tutor, and must provide an unofficial transcript and a faculty reference. Students with complete applications will be contacted for an interview.

Tutor Orientation and Training

Peer tutors have the opportunity to receive training in tutoring skills and approaches. Tutor training sessions are offered every semester. These training sessions typically include topics such as the tutor's role, both non-directive and explicit tutoring methods, learning styles applications in tutoring, interpersonal dynamics, and referrals. The Tutoring Services coordinator and program assistant are also available to help tutors in developing particular tutoring skills.
