The International Student & Scholar Services office offers seven great programs for helping international and U.S. students meet, mingle and equip themselves with the tools to communicate across cultures. The International Friendship Program introduces international and U.S. students for one-on-one conversation and exchange.
T.A.L.K. Taking Action to Learn about “Kulture” is a weekly discussion group for international and U.S. students that explores issues relating to culture.
Road Trip U.S.A. is an organization that plans short trips to "see the U.S.A. that Hollywood doesn't show you!"Building Communications in a New Culture
The Counseling Center offers this DISCUSSION group for international students who speak English as a second language and are interested in communicating themselves more effectively in a new cultural setting. The group provides information as well as the opportunity to discuss cultural adjustment, communication styles, relationships issues, and career/future plans. International Student Support GroupThe Counseling Center also offers a SUPPORT group for international students who are interested in addressing and sharing some personal experiences that are common to them (e.g., cultural adjustment, friendships, learning a second language, academic success, etc.). L.I.F.T. Mentoring Program
The Office of Multicultural Affairs offers the L.I.F.T. (Leaders who Inspire and Foster positive Transitions) program, which was created to welcome new diverse culture students to the American University community. Students are teamed up with student, faculty, or staff mentors who offer advice and support during their transition to college, introduce them to the culturally rich environment on- and off-campus and provide resources to enhance their educational experience.
Student Organizations
Student clubs and associations are administered through Student Activities. Any student can participate in a club or even start a new one. The List of Student Clubs seems to be endless, but is a good place to start if you want to see what's out there and how to join.
