American University is committed to ensuring accessibility for to university programs and activities for all qualified students with disabilities. In order to promote full participation on campus, one of the following offices may be of assistance.
Specialized services are available in the Academic Support Center to students with documented learning disabilities or ADHD.
Students with learning disabilities or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are encouraged to identify themselves to the Academic Support Center as soon as possible once admitted. Upon receipt of current documentation from a qualified professional, which will assist in determining reasonable accommodations at the university, an ASC counselor can help students notify faculty and request reasonable accommodations.
The ASC also offers a structured program for entering freshmen with learning disabilities who are seeking additional support during the transition year to college. Students interested in the Learning Services Program must identify themselves in the regular admissions process and submit a supplementary application to the program at the time they apply to the university. Students with Learning Disabilities: Policies, Procedures and Guidelines offers faculty information about working with and providing accommodations for students with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Procedures for Receiving Testing Accommodations is provided to inform students in the Academic Support Center of the steps to take in seeking accommodations for a learning disability.
Faculty may also access a syllabus insert that can be used to inform students about the availability of academic support and disability-related services on campus.
