Tutoring Services
The Academic Support Center's peer tutor referral service matches students who need a tutor with student tutors. When a student requests a tutor, Tutoring Services makes a referral typically within 48 hours. If a tutor is not available for the course requested, Tutoring Services makes every effort to identify a qualified tutor. In 2005-2006, Tutoring Services processed 485 tutoring requests.
Peer tutoring entails a modest fee. The rate for peer tutoring if the tutor is an undergraduate student is $10 per hour; the rate if the tutor is a graduate student is $12 per hour. The frequency of tutoring is determined by the student and tutor.
ASC peer tutors have demonstrated mastery in their field of study. They help students not only understand course material, but also develop more effective ways to learn it and to prepare for exams. The tutor's role is to respond to students' specific needs and to give students the opportunity to practice and to try new study techniques that will help them become independent learners.
In a recent survey, students who have used Tutoring Services have commented that "It's flexible, and a great opportunity to learn outside the classroom." "Student tutors are friendly, understand simple questions, and have a lot of patience to explain things." "It is helpful because it gives structure to a specific subject."
