About Us
Our Mission
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally (GLBTA) Resource Center works to strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus community that welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities by providing support, educational resources, and advocacy.
Our Vision
We envision an AU where people of all sexual orientations and gender identities are understood, appreciated, and fully included in the community and where equitable treatment and outcomes prevail.
Office History
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally (GLBTA) Resource Center was created in September 1994 with no staffing. Originally called the Sexual Minority Resource Center (SMRC), the tiny office was located in Butler Pavilion. Run completely by volunteers, the Resource Center was only open when students could be in the office. In January 1997, a part-time Graduate Assistant position was created and directed the center. It was that same year that the SMRC changed names to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Resource Center.
In August 1999, the GLBTA Resource Center became a university-funded office under the Office of Campus Life. In that same year, the first full time staff member in the office was hired. The number of resources and events available in/through the Resource Center has grown dramatically in the past few years, as has the space in the office.
After the second floor of Mary Graydon Center was renovated in 2001, the GLBTA Resource Center moved into Room 201, the largest office space to date. In 2005, the Resource Center added a Program Coordinator as the second full-time staff member.
