Frequently Asked Questions About the Resource Center

What does the Resource Center do?

The mission of the Resource Center is to strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus community that welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities by providing support, educational resources, and advocacy. In practical terms, this means that the Resource Center programs events throughout the semester, provides training and education on GLBT issues (through programs such as our Safe Space Sticker Program and our Rainbow Speakers Bureau), provides resources about GLBT issues, does campus advocacy to ensure that we have a safe and inclusive campus environment, and provides a safe drop-in space on campus. Each semester, between 8 and 10 students volunteer or work in the office regularly, more than 20 students volunteer as part of our various programs, more than 40 students drop in each week, and more than 300 students attend one of our events throughout the semester.

"Did You Know" Fact Sheets

The "Did You Know?" sheets are a variety of informational fliers addressingtopics of sexual orientation, being an ally, trans issues, and coming out. The sheets are an excellent educational or research tool and are available to American University students, faculty, and staff at no cost (all "Did You Know?" sheets are in PDF format).

How many GLBT students are there at AU?

There is no way to know the answer to this question. AU does not track GLBT students, and even if we tried to, it would be impossible to get a real count since many GLBT students are in the closet. However, we have worked hard to ensure that AU has an open and welcoming campus climate and many GLBT students feel comfortable being out. As a result, AU has a strong and active GLBT community on campus.

To get involved with the GLBT community on campus you can subscribe to the GLBTA Resource Center listserv and check out the GLBT groups on campus.

How much harassment is on campus?

AU is a microcosm of society, and like all other parts of society, there are members of the campus community who engage in harassing or discriminatory behavior. However, harassment based on sexual orientation is a fairly rare occurrence on campus, and most GLBT students do not face harassment. The university non-discrimination policy includes sexual orientation and gender identity and when incidents do occur, the university handles them in a swift and effective manner in order to ensure that all students are able to pursue their education in a supportive environment that is free from harassment.

What resources are available in the D.C. area for GLBT students?

D.C. is a metropolitan area with an active and engaged GLBT community. Our location in the nation’s capital means that there are numerous local and national GLBT organizations located in the city, and as a result there are a wide range of volunteer and internship opportunities for students. Furthermore, organizations like the local Whitman Walker Clinic and the film festival mean that there are always a wide range of GLBT social and cultural activities taking place in town.

Check out our local and national groups pages to get more information about various GLBT organizations and resources.
