GLBTA Life at AU
Making the Right Choice for You
Official Rules and Policies
American University prohibits discrimination and discriminatory harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The college has a history of strictly enforcing its non-discrimination policy, and anyone who is a victim of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is taken seriously. Those who have been victims of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity can come to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally Resource Center (GLBTA Resource Center) and speak with a staff member in confidence and the staff at the GLBTA Resource Center can assist the student in an appropriate course of action. This policy of non-discrimination is clearly stated on all materials published by American University (including materials relating to admissions), and campus safety reports can be obtained free of charge from the Office of Public Safety.
Like many other socially progressive academic institutions, American University offers all its faculty, staff, and students domestic partner benefits. This means that same-sex partners of faculty, students, or staff at American University are covered by the University health plan, should they elect to pay for coverage for their family. American University fully recognizes same-sex relationships to the extent they are permitted by law to do so. This translates into a community that is welcoming to GLBT faculty and staff that wish to teach, conduct research, and work at American University.
