GLBT Studies, Faculty, Staff, and Campus Climate
At American University, there are out GLBT faculty and staff in various departments of the school. The GLBT faculty and staff come from many departments ranging from Anthropology to Biology to Communications and beyond. If you look around campus, you will see some offices with American University Safe Space stickers on doors and windows. These indicate students, staff, and faculty members who have gone through the Safe Space Sticker Program training and indicated that they want to be a visible 'safe spaces' for GLBT members of the campus community. Just like the students at American University, the faculty and staff are there to help make sure you have a great college experience here in Washington, D.C.
Although we do not offer a major or minor in GLBT studies (or gay studies), students who are interested in GLBT studies can contact the GLBTA Resource Center for assistance and guidance on creating an interdisciplinary major in GLBT studies. We offer some classes that together would help you construct a major to suit your academic needs in GLBT studies. American University is a member of a consortium of Washington-area schools, which means you can take courses at those schools, and get credit from American University for those courses. This means your choice of classes for a GLBT Studies major are even greater than the classes that are offered here at American University.
