September 2000

September 19 - A Discussion with Keith Boykin - Join Keith Boykin and Washington College of Law professor Teemu Ruskola at a discussion of Keith's activism and the intersection of race and sexual orientation in America.  Keith is a graduate of Harvard Law School and is now an adjunct professor in the School of Public Affairs at American University.  This event is sponsored by the Office of Diversity Services and the Lambda Law Society.  Place: Washington College of Law, Room 600.  Time: 4:00 pm.  All welcome.  Refreshments Provided.  Contact: Lambda Law Society.

September 19 - The Legacy of the First Gay Protest - A discussion by SOC professor Rodger Streitmatter on the lives and legacy of the activists at the first gay protest in Washington, DC.  Place: Mary Graydon Center 220A (Gianni Room).  Time: 6:30 pm.  All welcome.  Contact: GLBTA Resource Center.

September 22 - 24 - 8th Annual Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference - Presentations which explore any facet of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or queer language, linguistics, literature, non-verbal communication, cinema, photography, visual art etc. are welcome at this conference. September 27 - Kazim Ali - Come hear Kazim Ali, Professor of Literature at NYU discuss the legacy of Malcolm X.  In particular, Professor Ali will discuss the last 8 months of Malcolm X's political development and his struggle to build connections between race, gender, and class exploitation.  Place:Gray Hall Bentley Lounge.  Time: 8:00 pm.  All welcome.  Contact: GLBTA Resource Center.  Cosponsored with KPU.

March 29 - Action Ready Troubadours Creating Art & Revolution(ARTCAR). Imagine a roadshow combining hands-on resistance and movement-building workshops with electrifying folk-punk performances. Picture a big brown 1984 Volvo bandwagon full of women-- women who incite participation, challenge injustice, motivate folks to take action, and demonstrate viable, creative options for working and living. These women are Jolie Rickman, Sprout, Sara Marcus, Gina Young and Marisa Ragonese. Together they're ARTCAR! and they're coming your way! 

ARTCAR! presents two thought-provoking workshops: Feminist Interruptions Into Privilege and Anti-Racism in Action.

ARTCAR! presents a spectacular performance showcasing some of the finest in feminist folk-punk, plus a poetry reading by Natalie Illum from mothertongue.

April 2001

April 4 - National Day of Silence.  Take a vow of silence from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm to honor and combat the silencing of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.  The Day of Silence was organized to create ìaudible visibility and is celebrated all over the globe.  Participants take a vow of silence from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to draw attention to those who have been silenced by homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia and oppression.  Instead of speaking, participants wear black t-shirts and show a card explaining the reason for their silence.  Last year, over 150 students participated in this event at AU.

You can pick up the cards on Monday 4/2, Tuesday 4/3 in Mary Graydon, 4/4 on the quad or in the GLBTA Resource Center (Letts 45). We have tee shirts you can buy for $12 or $10 on a sliding scale. If you do not want to by a tee shirt, simply wear black.

April 4 - Breaking the Silence.  Join AU Queers and Allies for a meeting breaking the silence after the National Day of Silence with longtime lesbian activist Barbara Gittings, who will be presenting, ìGay and Smiling: Tales From Our 50 Years of Activism.î  Place: Bentley Lounge.  Time: 5:00 pm.  Contact: GLBTA Resource Center

April 11 - Asian Awareness Month Roundtable. Lunch with Shamina Singh, former Executive Director of the White House
Initiative on Asian Pacific Islander Affairs along with staff of the office. Roundtable discussion of issues affecting Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the United States and White House Policy.  Time: 12:00 pm. Location: Anderson Den. Contact: GLBTA Resource Center

Thursday, September 13--Governor Howard Dean

KPU is bringing the governor of Vermont to campus. Governor Dean signed Vermont's Civil Union bill into law in 2000 and has faced a great deal of opposition from anti-gay organizations in the state. Come hear him speak and ask questions. For more information, contact the Kennedy Political Union.

September 21 - 23 - Lavender Languages IX
American University Campus
This annual conference occurs at American University in the fall.  The focus of this conference is on GLBT language and linguistic issues.  Presentations which explore any facet of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or queer language, linguistics, literature, non-verbal communication, cinema, photography, visual art etc. are welcome at this conference. Wednesday, October 10--Before Night Falls

Don't miss this showing of this award-winning film. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, Before Night Falls is a richly imagined journey into the life and writings of the brilliant Cuban author and exile Reinaldo Arenas. Before Night Falls spans the whole of Arenas' life, from his rural childhood and his early embrace of the Revolution to the persecution he would later experience as a writer and homosexual in Castro's Cuba; from his departure from Cuba in the Mariel Harbor exodus of 1980 to his exile and death in the United States. It is a portrait of a man whose search for freedom - artistic, political, sexual - defied poverty, censorship, persecution, exile and death.

Andrew Holleran is the fall 2001 writer in residence at American University. 26 - Homophobia in the Halls of Justice: Sexual Orientation Bias in the Court System
Washington College of Law
In this day-long symposium, panelists and audience members will explore the institutionalization of homophobia in the court system. In addition, the discussion will examine previous studies of race, gender and ethnic bias in the judicial system. Speakers include Amelia Craig Cramer, presenting the findings of the State Bar Association of Arizona's Study of Sexual Orientation Bias in the State Court System and Todd Brower, presenting the findings of the Judical Council of California's Study of Sexual Orientation Bias in the State Court System. Once again, Queers & Allies will be showing their support for GLBT issues by taking a vow of silence all day. There will be a discussion session at the end for people to share their thoughts and feelings. Contact queersandallies@american.edu to be a part of the day.

As part of Asian Awareness Month, the GLBTA Resource Center along with the Multicultural Affairs office is sponsoring a viewing of Margaret Cho's documentary "I'm the One that I Want." Cho is a huge supporter of gay and lesbian folks and this is a tremendously funny film.

9- Dylan Scholinski

Dylan Scholinski is a genderqueer author and activist. His memoir, The Last Time I Wore A Dress, traces his experiences being institutionalized as a teenager because of non-traditional gender expression. Come hear him speak about his experiences--and get a chance to have him sign a copy of his book.

It's Women Makes Movies Week, hosted by the Center for Social Media! Come see this hour long documentary as it traces the four year journey of Sue's transition from female to male. The film documents not only how the transiton affects Sue, but Sue's friends and partner.

As part of Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month this film shares the stores of 3 women who were adopted from Korea by middle-class, Caucasian families in the US. This is the inspiring documentary film about the residents of Billings, Montana who responded to an upsurge in hate violence by standing together for a hate-free community. In 1993, hate activities in Billings reached a crescendo. KKK flies were distributed, the Jewish cemetery was desecrated, the home of a Native American family was painted with swastikas, and a brick was thrown through the window of a six year old boy who displayed a Meonrah for Hanukkah. Our moderator for the debate will be Bruce DePuyt, host of Newschannel 8's public affairs show, NewsTalk, and our panelists include Vanessa Williams (The Washington Post), Lisa Nurnberger (WAMU 88.5 FM); Sam Ford (ABC 7/SJLA-TV); and Chad Robinson, a junior in the School of Public Affairs and member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council of American University. Morphing into a cast of characters, while drawing on the inspiration of poets Audre Lorde, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman and Federico Garcia Lorca, performance artist Peterson Toscano, playfully explores what it means to be queer in the 21st Century.Through this one-man performance piece, Toscano delves into the passion and confusion of internet dating, plumbs the depths of queer history, and humorously exposes the conflicts and contradictions within the queer community today. From the world’s oldest queer story to the gay ABC’s, this piece is filled with non-stop comedy with a generous sprinkling of compelling insights. Regarded for his skillful on-stage transformations, Toscano introduces his audience to characters who tell original stories in unique voices.
