Prospective Students

Request an Advisor

So you're thinking about applying to American University. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Resource Center works closely with the Office of Admissions to provide prospective GLBT students with the opportunity to not only visit campus and learn more about AU, but also a chance to learn about the campus climate for GLBT students. The Office of Admissions offers several different ways to visit American University. If you are planning to come for a day visit where you attend classes with a student or for one of our overnight programs, you can request a host who knows about GLBT life on campus. Just fill out the form below and we will work with our liaison in the Office of Admissions to ensure that your host can answer your questions about being a GLBT student at American University.

Just have questions about AU? Our High School Project Advisor Program matches prospective freshmen and transfer students with current AU students who are trained to be peer advisors. This is a great way to get a student’s view of campus as well as GLBT life at AU and in Washington D.C. We’ll answer any questions you have or find someone who can.

Day Visits: Choose to attend a class in an area of academic interest, have lunch with a current student, meet with an academic advisor or attend an information session. You can find out more general information about Day Visits by calling 202-885-6139.

Overnight Visits: Overnight visits are open to all accepted students. Come to campus, meet students, eat in the Terrace Dining Room, attend information sessions, and sit in on a class during an overnight visit. All visits begin at 3:00 p.m. and depart at 1:00 p.m. the following day.

Dates for fall overnights will be posted soon!

To find out additional general information about Overnight visits, call 202-885-6139. Students and parents are required to sign a liability release form to participate in the overnight visit program.

Please notify the Office of Admissions at least three weeks in advance if you need special accommodations because of disabilities. Thank you.

AU Preview Days

AU Preview Days are open house programs designed for all interested prospective students and their families. This program includes presentations by the five schools/colleges, the Admissions office, the Campus Life office, as well as lunch with current students, staff, and faculty.
