Academic Advisors at AU advise you on more than just what classes to take. They help integrate GLBTQ Studies classes into your major, help you develop a GLBTQ studies minor, but they also can guide students to other resources that are available. Many advisors have gone through Safe Space training and display Safe Space stickers in their office, making a welcoming environment for GLBTQ students.

SIS Advisor Justina Grubor says that she “lets the whole student’s self into the room.” Justina also helps students connect with other resources on campus such as the Academic Support Center or Counseling Center because she understands that, “the academic experience isn’t the only part of college life.”

CAS Advisor Darryl Robinson understands that “when students are grappling with gender identity and sexual orientation issues, it can often have an affect on their academics.” He directs these students to the available resources on campus such as the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally Resource Center.
Darryl volunteers with many organizations in DC, including the Whitman-Walker Clinic which helps provide healthcare and social support to people living with HIV/AIDS. He can connect students with this organization and with different volunteering opportunities throughout the city.

SPA Advisor Briana Weadock says that, in respect to trans issues, “AU is more progressive than most campuses, there is training on trans issues is being developed for faculty and staff. In general, the faculty here at AU is open to learning about gender identity and sensitive to the concerns of all students. They are very cognizant to making the classroom a safe space for all identities.”
Briana also has found that AU is “a supportive environment for the GLBTQ community; a safe space for students in the coming out process.”
