Ro Lewis, Graduate student, International Training and Education Ro Lewis has been in the working environment for many years and has tried to be out at work, but people were ashamed of her because she was feminine, not homosexual. Only recently has she started to come out as a trans person. She applied to AU and started coming to the GLBTA Resource Center to meet people. She wasn’t sure about anything, but was able to find a safe space: “It’s really important to have a safe space, where I can start to be ok with me, who I am. I have been able to become more comfortable walking around, more confident being gender transgressive, and having a safe base.” “I love it here; there are so many out queer people! I feel safe; there are posters everywhere about gender identity. The three months here at AU have made a huge difference in my life, there are trans support groups and my experience here has helped me express myself. Even as an older student, I am accepted.” “I am at the best possible place for being openly queer and an activist.” |
