Information For Incoming Transfer Students

We guarantee housing to transfers who are admitted with 36 or less credits and who have submitted an enrollment deposit and housing application by July 1.  Transfers students with more than 36 credits and those who also deposit after July 1 will be considered on a space available basis, based on the date the housing deposit is submitted.

Please be aware that housing assignments are based on the order in which we receive enrollment deposits. Students with an earlier deposit will have priority of assignment to a double room. Once the double rooms are exhausted, students will be assigned to a temporary triple room. Students can also opt into a triple room for the year by selecting this option on the enrollment application. There is a cost differential of approximately $1,219 per semester. 

Please note that being assigned to a temporary triple room does not guarantee that a student will remain in a temporary triple room for the entire academic year. It is possible for a room to be de-tripled at any point throughout the year. Students in temporary triple rooms will be offered the chance to de-triple as space becomes available. The room can be de-tripled if one or more students in the room vacate the space for any reason. Room cost will be pro-rated at the time of de-tripling to reflect the amount of time spent in a temporary triple room and the amount of time spent in a double room in that particular semester. We make every effort to de-triple students as quickly as possible, and we do expect to offer every student in a temporary triple the opportunity to de-triple by the start of the spring term.

FAQs - Transfer Students

I am a transfer student. Do I need to fill out the housing application for the Residence system?
All incoming transfer students who wish to live on campus should pay the additional $200 deposit for housing in their enrollment agreement. After your additional $200 housing deposit is processed, a housing application is entered into our database for a manual assignment. If you are a fall transfer student who has paid a deposit by the July 1st deadline, you will be sent a link to the AU Housing Portal to complete your housing preferences. We will utilize these preferences to make your housing assignment. The University makes every effort to fulfill housing preferences, but cannot guarantee them.

When will transfer students find out whether or not they have been assigned to University-provided housing?
Eligible transfer students will be assigned to housing by July 15th. Students can verify their assignment through the myau.american.edu student portal (Under "Life @ AU," then "University Housing Assignment," "Forward to Fall2014") after this date. If there is no assignment posted on that date, please contact housing@american.edu for more information. Assignment of transfer students with more than 36 credits will continue as space becomes available during the summer, based on deposit date.
