Academic Year Housing
Choosing a Roommate
Options for Selecting a Roommate
Few decisions will impact the next year of your life as profoundly as selecting a roommate. Living with a peer is an important step in the college student development process, inevitably teaching many of the life lessons that occur out of the classroom. While it is not encouraged, many students opt to live with friends from high school who are also coming to American University. Others prefer the luck of the draw, believing that the opportunity to make new friends is more important than familiarity. Whichever route you take, your roommate will hopefully be a confidant, study-buddy, dinner partner, teammate and, above all, a friend.
The University makes every effort to fulfill roommate requests, but cannot guarantee them. Applying early (before June 1) will improve your chances. Please indicate on your housing application whether or not you are a smoker so that roommates can be matched accordingly. Please note that all of our residences are smoke free.
Receiving a Room Assignment
Room assignments will be available starting June 13, 2008 through you’re my.american.edu web portal in the Life@AU section. Your assignment will include any available contact information for assigned roommates. It is a good idea for roommates to contact one another prior to coming to campus to say "Hi" and discuss common interests, who should bring what to campus, etc. Please be aware that, although we do everything we can to avoid making changes once assignments have been posted, assignments are always subject to change.
In addition, throughout the summer, you will receive information via the
Housing and Dining Programs
website on refrigerator rentals, personal property insurance,
long distance telephone service, student life, etc.
If you are having difficulty accessing any of the above materials, please e-mail us at housinganddiningprograms@american.edu.
