Intern Housing FAQs
When can I check-in?
Interns may check in at the front desk beginning at 3PM on their assigned check-in date. You may arrive anytime after your check-in time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our front desk staff will register you and give you your room keys, mailbox keys, and parking pass (if needed). Unfortunately, we cannot allow early check-ins or late check-outs.
What time is check-out?
Check-out is at 12 Noon on the Saturday of your week of departure.
Where are you located?
American University is located at 4400 Massachusetts Ave, Washington, DC 20016, in one of northwest Washington, DC’s most beautiful residential areas; AU is just minutes by bus, cab, Metro, or car from the city’s most famous sites.
Are all of your residence halls air-conditioned?
Yes, all of the residence halls come equipped with air-conditioning and individual flow controls in each room.
I am over 21, can I bring alcohol into the residence halls?
No, alcohol is not permitted in any American University residence hall.
If I am placed in a double or triple room, will my roommate also be an intern?
Yes, we house interns together in the same rooms and in the same buildings so that you can share a feeling of community with the others in your area.
Can I purchase a meal plan?
Meals plans are available for interns. You can purchase a meal during your application process or once you have arrived on campus. Interns can also opt to eat on campus using cash or credit card.
What dates are available for intern housing in Summer 2013?
Our 2013 summer season begins May 12th, 2013 and ends August 10th, 2013.
How secure is your campus?
Our residence halls are only accessible to summer guests with a Summer 2013 Guest Card, or an AUID for students living on campus. Also, the residence halls are staffed with campus hosts at front desks on each side of campus. Additionally, our public safety officers patrol campus regularly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Are you nearby a Metro stop?
Yes, we are closest to the Tenleytown/American University Metro stop. The university shuttle runs directly from that Metro station to the campus and is complementary for AU students, faculty, staff, interns, and summer guests.
Do you provide linens?
No. Linens are not provided for interns.
Where do I sign up?
What if I have additional questions and I cannot find the answers online?

When will I know if housing was available to me?
We do our best to accommodate all requests. We will process your application within 10 business days of receipt.
When will I receive my actual room assignment?
You will receive information about where to check in prior to your arrival, but we are not able to provide you with your specific room assignment until you arrive on campus. This is similar to how a hotel operates – you know you have a double room confirmed but you do not have the specific room number until you complete the check-in process.
Can I request to live with a friend?
In order to be placed with someone you know, you must both make that request in writing (either on the application or in an email to email@example.com). If both interns request one another, we do our best to meet those requests.
Can I receive mail? If so, at what address?
Mail Services continues during the summer months for both AU students and visiting interns. Detailed information on summer mail services will be available to all on campus residents at your building desk in May.

What should I bring?
We encourage you to keep in mind that you will only be in Washington DC for a very short time and that your stay here will likely keep you very busy. When packing for your internship and your room, we recommend the following items as a beginning packing list:

Bed linens, blankets & pillows
Clothing & Shoes
Toiletries & Shower Caddy
- Television/VCR/DVD player
- Comfortable shoes
What can I not bring?
Your safety is important. Due to the hazards associated with their use, the following appliances may not be present in residence hall rooms:
- Personal air conditioners
- Grills (including George Foreman grills)
- Halogen lamps
- Immersion coals
Oil,kerosene, and gas lamps
- Steam vaporizers
- Any appliance attached to multiple extension cords
These appliances may only be used in designated cooking areas or kitchens:
- Coffee makers
- Electrical appliances with heating elements
- Hot pots
- Popcorn poppers
- Rice cookers
- Toasters/Toaster ovens
