

Advantages of Intern Housing at American University
American University is Washington, D.C.'s most attractive housing option for visiting interns, offering competitively priced housing in an ideal location for interns and students coming to the nation's capital. Located in one of Washington's most beautiful residential areas in the northwest corner of the District of Columbia, American University is convenient to all the resources of the city and surrounding suburbs. Our residence halls and entire campus are fully air-conditioned and have wireless internet access!
Spring Housing is available for anyone looking to come to the Washington DC area for the spring. You do not have to have an internship in place, or be currently working at an internship site to qualify for Spring Intern Housing at American University. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older by expected check-in date.
Spring Housing is available on Tenley Campus for $250 per person/per week for double occupancy and $310 per week for single occupancy. On the Tenley Campus, we also have triple occupancy rooms available for $220.00 per person/per week. Please note that there is a four week minimum with all spring stays. A 14.5% DC Hotel Tax will also be added to your total stay.
Weeks
stayed are calculated in seven-night increments. Four, five, six or seven
nights stayed count as one full week. One two or three nights in residence
do not count as a full week. For example; if your stay is five weeks and four
nights, you will be billed for six weeks; if your stay is five weeks and three
nights, you will be billed for five weeks.
A
four-week minimum stay is required. If you register or stay for less than
four weeks, you will be billed for four weeks.
Please
note that the District of Columbia levies a 14.5% hotel tax on all room rates
(not included in above rates).
| DEPOSIT: | A non-refundable $200 deposit is required to reserve a space in a residence hall. The $200 deposit will be applied to your total housing balance due and must accompany your housing application.

| RETURNED CHECKS AND CREDIT CARDS: | There
is a $25 service fee for all returned checks. Invalid credit cards may
result in forfeiture of room privileges.

| BALANCE DUE AT CHECK-IN: | Balance payments (total housing fees due for summer less the deposit paid) are due prior to arrival. Sorry, no exceptions.

| CANCELLATIONS: | All housing cancellations must be made in writing or by e-mail to Housing and Dining Programs. Phone cancellations will not be honored. Reminder: If you cancel you forfeit your $200 deposit and any unused housing.

| EXTENSIONS, EARLY CHECK-OUTS, and NO-SHOWS: | All extensions must be requested in writing through Housing and Dining Programs (you can e-mail us at gannon@american.edu). Extensions will be granted on a space available basis, and you may be required to move to a different room and/or hall to accommodate the extension. Please note that no extensions will be granted past May 12th at 12:00 Noon. Additional fees due must be paid immediately upon notification from Housing and Dining Programs. Interns checking out before their scheduled departure date forfeit all unused housing fees. If you fail to check-in on the date submitted on your application, we will attempt to contact you to confirm your arrival. However, room reservations will be cancelled 48-hours after your check-in date. |
Our on-campus rooms average 12' by 15' and come with two standard twin beds, two desks, two chairs, and closet space for two. You may move the furniture around as you wish, but must return it to its original configuration before checking out. Your room is fully carpeted and has overhead lighting and air-conditioning with in-room controls. It is equipped with phone jacks the ability to call room to room on our campus; Pay phones are available on each floor for off campus and long distance calls. Use a personal calling card for long distance. Your room also comes with cable TV access and two computer jacks for access to AU's EagleNet network (and the internet). You may bring a mini-refrigerator or lease one once you arrive on campus. Each floor has laundry facilities, stove and microwave-equipped kitchenettes, a lounge with cable television, and separate communal bathrooms and shower facilities. You can receive mail, packages, and express mail at the residence halls. The residence hall staff, including a full-time Resident Director, will assist you, answer any questions that might arise or help you with any issues during your stay.
All floors are coed. Smoking is not permitted in any of our
residence halls. All common areas, including hallways, bathrooms, lounges,
and lobbies, and all other buildings on campus are non-smoking areas. No alcohol
is permitted in the residence halls at any time.

requests that we cannot honor are automatically defaulted to your indicated
second choice accommodations. Single requests will be handled on a first-come,
first-served basis (based on the date the application and deposit are
received). We make every effort to accommodate specific hall requests
and all roommate requests, but cannot guarantee requested assignments.
Roommate pairs are strongly encouraged to submit their applications at
the same time to ensure pairing. |
Spring Housing at American University includes many amenities that everyone needs! Included in your room costs are your cable television, room-to-room calling, wired and wireless high-speed internet, individual room air-conditioning units, and carpeted floors. You will also have access to laundry facilities on each floor, and a common space for cooking and hanging out. On campus, you have access to the Jacob’s Fitness Center, shuttle service to the metro and main campus, and an on-campus convenience store.

Meal plans are available on campus through our campus food service vendor, Bon Appetit. Interns eat in the the main campus cafeteria, located in the Mary Graydon Center, and/or the Tenley Campus Cafe. Meal plan options include EagleBuck$. The intern meal plan options and prices are as follows:

You can also purchase food on campus at the Tavern, the Marketplace, McDonald's, and Wagshal's Delicatessen and Wagshal's American Cafe. A number of restaurants and several grocery stores are either within walking distance of campus or a short AU shuttle-bus ride away.
EagleBuck$ are the convenient, cashless way to pay on and off campus at the areas most popular businesses. A prepaid, stored-value account that's part of your summer guest card, EagleBuck$ has you covered with whatever you need, whenever you need it, during your stay
EagleBuck$ are included in the intern meal plans offered at American University. As a form of payment, you'll use your EagleBuck$ at numerous locations around campus if you do not wish to or cannot eat in the Terrace Dining Room and/or Tenley Campus Cafe. The area's most popular off-campus businesses now accept EagleBuck$ and you can use it to pay for restaurants, food delivery, haircuts and other essential student services including residence hall laundry machines and law library copiers.
In one location at the center of campus you'll also find the Eagle's Nest convenience store, a full-service copy center, mailing and fax services at the UPS Store, a hair salon, and a full-service bank with ATM facilities.
When you check in, you will receive a Guest Card. This is your spring ID and a valuable tool you will use for many purposes:

Check-In and Check-Out Information
Spring intern housing for 2008 is available from Friday, January 4 at 9:00am to Saturday, May 10 at 12:00pm. We cannot allow early check-ins or late check-outs. Interns may check in at the front desk of their assigned part of campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning and ending on the above dates and times. Our front desk staff will register you and give you your room keys, mailbox keys, and intern welcome packet.

We encourage you to keep in mind that you will only be in Washington
DC for a very short time and that your stay here will likely keep you very
busy. When packing for your internship and your room, we recommend the following

Please
print out the Spring
2008 Housing License Agreement and Application. Once you
have completed the application, mail both the application and license agreement
along with your $200.00 non-refundable deposit to the address as the bottom
of the application.
When your application has been received, you will receive an e-mail from us comfirming we have received your application and detailing the tentative cost of your housing. Room assignment notices for spring will be sent via e-mail once it has been received and processed. These notices will include your balance due which you need to pay prior to your arrival.
