Students at AU
Office of Campus Life

Housing and Dining Programs opens its residence halls to AU students every summer to provide a convenient and cost-effective summer housing option. You can enjoy all of the benefits of residence hall life at a cost that is competitive with most off-campus accommodations, particularly when you factor in expenses such as travel, cable, phone service and internet access. Another advantage of summer housing on campus is the convenient spring-to-summer and summer-to-fall move-over. While the logistics can be challenging, you can move your belongings into your new housing assignment as soon as the room is cleaned from the previous semester.

Summer housing fills up quickly. If you are interested in staying in the residence halls for the Summer of 2008, you can only apply online.

Where You'll Be Staying

AU summer students will once again be housed on South Campus, primarily in Letts Hall.  All amenities AU students enjoy during the academic year remain in place during the summer months, including computer and phone jacks, voice mail and cable hook-up, all at no extra charge. One of the residence hall front desks on South Campus will be staffed on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis for security and you will continue to use your AU student ID for access at the front door. A full-time Resident Director will be available to resolve special problems and offer assistance.

Room Types

Most AU summer students will stay in double occupancy rooms on South Campus during their stay. An extremely limited number of singles are available from May 21st through July 28th only. Single requests will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis (based on the date the application is received at the Housing and Dining Programs office). Single requests that we cannot honor are automatically defaulted to your second choice of accommodations.

During the summer, the number of single rooms is often limited so we offer an option for students called "Double as a Single" room. With this housing option, students are assigned to a single room that is actually a double in terms of the size of the room and the amount of furniture for only slightly more in cost than a single room.

We make every effort to accommodate all roommate requests, but cannot guarantee requested assignments. Roommate pairs are strongly encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible and at the same time to ensure pairing. For students currently living on South Campus, or students who will be living on South Campus in the Fall of 2008, we make every effort to house you during the summer in your current spring assignment or your upcoming fall assignment. We cannot guarantee these assignments, but we will make every effort to minimize your moving and logistics.

Parking and Shuttle Service

For AU summer students living on campus, parking is available in the Sports Center parking garage or the Centennial Hall parking area. Permits can be purchased and billed to your student account through Transportation Services.

AU's shuttle service continues to operate during the summer months, making it easy for you to get to a summer job or internship. Hours are similar to academic year schedules, beginning at approximately 7:00 a.m. and running until 12:15 a.m., later on the weekends (3:15 a.m.).

Recreation and Athletic Facilities

All summer students enjoy regular academic year access to most of American University's many athletic and recreation facilities. A student ID is required for admission to the Jacobs Fitness Center and the Sports Center. Some facilities are used for sports camps during the summer months, but usually only during the day.

Dates of Availability

Summer student housing for 2008 is available from Sunday, May 11, at 3:00 p.m. to Saturday, August 9, at 12:00 p.m. Check-in at the residence hall front desk on your check-in date. Students may not check-in until after 3:00pm on the date of their arrival to campus.

IMPORTANT - Please note: Spring Commencement exercises are scheduled for Sunday, May 11, and many seniors will not check out until that day. AU summer students assigned to rooms occupied by seniors staying late will need to remain in their current spring semester rooms until their Centennial room has been vacated and cleaned. These students will need to apply for late stay with the resident director of their current hall.

*** If you plan to leave campus following your final exams, and then return for the summer on or after May 11, your summer room on South Campus may not be ready by the time you plan to leave campus. If this is the case, you MUST make arrangements to store your belonging while you are away from campus. You will not be able to leave your belongings in your spring assignment room. Only students who remain on campus and have approval for late stays can remain in their spring assignment rooms past the final check-out date on May 10, and then move to the South Campus room assignment once their summer rooms are vacated and cleaned. We regret that storage space is not available on campus. Short-term storage facilities are available in the area, or we suggest you locate a friend who can store your belongings until you return to campus.

Rates

On-Campus: $240 per person/per week for double occupancy and $300 per person/per week for single occupancy. (Remember, singles are limited and all single requests that we cannot honor automatically default to your second choice of accommodations.) A "Double as a Single" room is $330 per week and may only be occupied by one individual.

Double as a Single: Depending on occupancy, students who wish to be housed in singles but aren't able to be assigned to one may be given the option of buying out their double room and keeping it as a single for the summer. Students living in bought-out singles will be charged at a rate slightly higher than the standard single rate. AU students are reminded that cohabitating is a violation of your housing agreement.

Weeks stayed are calculated in seven-night increments. Four, five, six or seven nights stayed count as one full week. One two or three nights in residence do not count as a full week. For example; if your stay is five weeks and four nights, you will be billed for six weeks; if your stay is five weeks and three nights, you will be billed for five weeks.
