UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS:
AU awards a limited number of generous merit scholarships to academically-qualified
incoming international freshmen students. Scholarships range from $5,000
- $32,000 per academic year, and are guaranteed for four years, based
on continued successful academic performance. No additional scholarship
application is required; all applicants are automatically considered
for merit scholarships upon review of their admissions application.
Please see the list of resources below for additional non-AU scholarships,
as well as the Admissions office page on Scholarships
for International Students.
GRADUATE STUDENTS:
American University is committed to quality graduate education that is
responsive to the needs of students, disciplines, the university and the
larger community. Our goals are to provide a high quality educational
experience for our students and to offer graduate support that assists
students in completing their programs of study. Talented international
master's and doctoral students may qualify for Graduate Merit Awards through
their departments. These awards offer waivers ranging from twelve credits
to full tuition each year. Stipends may also be available. Applicants
should check directly with departments for further information. The University
has established two general categories of awards to assist graduate students:
Graduate Fellowships and Graduate Assistantships. How
to apply:
All graduate school applicants can indicate their interest for Merit
Assistance when they make application to one of the graduate programs.
Currently enrolled graduate students must complete the “Application
for Graduate Financial Awards for Currently Enrolled Student,”
which is available in the Admissions
Office of each graduate school.
When to apply:
The priority deadline for university-wide merit awards is February 1
for fall applicants. Some academic departments continue to consider
merit award applicants until late Spring, however applicants are encouraged
to apply by February 1.
American
Installment Plan:
The American Installment Plan (AIP) allows full time
students to spread their yearly out-of-pocket costs over 12 or 10 months.
Please contact the Student
Accounts office for more information.

American
University Office of Merit Awards
The Office of Merit Awards is located at American University’s
Career Center. The Office of Merit Awards prepares current American
University students to compete for nationally competitive, merit-based
scholarships and awards. They publicize major opportunities, select
the university’s nominees, and provide intensive training to candidates.
Although they are not a scholarship-finding service, they do maintain
resources for students to research smaller or specialized merit-based
grants not widely advertised to the university community. Among these
resources is a scholarship database, the Merit Awards Listings. The
Office of Merit Awards warmly encourages students who identify their
own scholarship possibilities to request our help in developing their
application essays.
