This includes internships for credit, whether it is paid or unpaid. The Department of Labor’s definition of “employment” is very broad and many unpaid internships or positions advertised as "volunteer" fall outside of the true definition of volunteer activity. This means you need appropriate work authorization before starting the position. If there is any confusion as to whether your off-campus opportunity is employment or volunteer work please stop by the ISSS office to speak with an advisor.
If you are planning to volunteer or engage in a non-credit bearing unpaid internship, please review the Volunteering in the US PDF. Ensure that the position meets the six-factor criteria outlined in the PDF to truly qualify as volunteer. Please speak with an immigration attorney if you need any further legal advice.
