J-1 Scholars & Student Interns

American University is enriched by the international community. International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) supports J-1 exchange visitors and university departments in immigration advising and other regulatory requirements.

AU is authorized by the U.S. Department of State to bring the following exchange visitor categories:

A professor enters the U.S. to teach, lecture, observe, or consult (but cannot be a candidate for a tenure track position). A research scholar researches, observes, or consults. Minimum of BA/BS degree with appropriate experience in the field is required. Minimum duration is 3 weeks, maximum is 5 years.

A scholar entering the U.S. for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating skills. Minimum duration is 1 day, maximum is 6 months.

An expert in a field of specialized knowledge or skills, who enters the U.S. for the purpose of observing, consulting, or demonstrating special knowledge or skills. Maximum duration is 1 year.

University/college students at foreign universities who intern with an AU faculty in residence to complete a requirement of the home university degree program. Maximum duration is 1 year.

For full course of study at an accredited institution. Duration of stay is limited to the length of the program.

J-1 students at American University must first apply for admission to an academic program.

Prospective Scholars & Student Interns

Visiting scholars and student interns must have an invitation from an American University department or faculty member to apply to become a J-1 exchange visitor. Please contact faculty or departments that align with your academic and research interests to see if there are possibilities for collaboration.

Incoming Scholars & Student Interns

Visiting scholars or student interns must follow the appropriate steps to obtain a J-1 visa and enter the United States.
