SEVIS Fee Payment

F-1 visa SEVIS Fee: $200
J-1 visa SEVIS Fee: $180

The SEVIS I-901 fee has been mandated by Congress since September 1, 2004 to support the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) program office and automated system that keeps track of students and exchange visitors and ensures that they maintain their status while in the United States.

Each student or exchange visitor issued an initial Form I-20 or DS-2019 on after September 1, 2004 is responsible for paying this fee to Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). There are some exceptions and some additional categories of continuing students who must pay the fee. For more information and detailed payment instructions, please see the quick links.

I-901 Form and Fee Payment

Please follow the steps below when completing the I-901 form and paying the I-901 SEVIS fee:

  1. Receive I-20 or DS-2019 from American University.
  2. Make visa appointment with U.S. Embassy/Consulate (if you are required to obtain an F-1 or J-1 visa in your passport before traveling to the U.S. -- please note that even if you are a citizen of Canada or Bermuda and exempt from the visa requirement, the SEVIS fee must be processed at least 3 business days prior to applying for admission at a U.S. port-of-entry).
  3. Complete the I-901 form and pay by credit or debit card, by check or money, or by using Western Union Quick Pay (see links to instructions below).
  4. Print your payment confirmation receipt by going to the I-901 website and selecting “Check Status.”
  5. Report to U.S. Embassy/Consulate for your visa interview with your printed I-901 payment receipt (excluding citizens of Canada and Bermuda). Please note that the I-901 SEVIS fee payment is not in place of the visa fee.
  6. Carry the I-901 payment confirmation receipt with your immigration documents when you enter the U.S.
