Your decision to attend AU is one of the most important ones that you'll ever make. The staff of New Student Programs is here to make sure all of AU's new students-first year, transfer, and graduate-start the academic year off right. The people you meet and the activities you participate in during orientation programs and Welcome Weeks activities will help to shape your AU experience. We hope that you'll look, listen, discover, and ask questions. Staff members from New Student Programs as well as other members of the university community, will do everything possible to help you on your journey towards success.

In addition to the resources highlighted below, please consult and use your New Student Checklist!

First Year Students
should plan to attend one of the New Student Orientation (NSO) programs offered in June and July. At Orientation, you'll learn about the academic life of the university, make new friends, and become familiar with the campus. By the time the classes begins, you'll be ready to fully engage in the AU experience. Click here to see the kind of things you'll be doing at NSO. If you were unable to attend NSO, we offer a program for students and their families during Welcome Weeks called First Year Fundamentals.

Welcome Weeks activities include moving into the residence halls and the Freshman Service Experience and Discover DC, both excellent ways to get to know your peers and the city at the same time. In addition, Student Activities and student organizations offer many social and educational programs to launch the year. For more information, see this year's Welcome Weeks schedule.

Transfer Students have two options to learn more about the services and resources available to AU students: A summer program offered in July and another program offered in August just before classes begin. These programs are called Transfer Transitions and are designed specifically for students who have already experienced college life.

Graduate students should plan to attend graduate orientation programs offered by their school or college. Click here to get more information.

Again, welcome. We're glad that you have decided to join us at American University!
