Freshman Service Experience
and FSE Orientation
The Freshman Service Experience (FSE) involves about 500 students each year in a three-day, four-evening program of volunteerism, reflection, and exploration of Washington, D.C. Since 1991, FSE has introduced more than 6,000 students into American University's tradition of public and community service. During the day, participants are assigned to teams that work at more than 45 nonprofit agencies and schools throughout the region. Our team leaders, AU upperclass students, are selected and trained to serve as guides and mentors for the week. Students typically contribute 13,000 hours of work to support local programs and communities over the course of the three days.
Please visit the Community Service Center Web site for more information about the Freshman Service Experience.Freshman Service Experience (FSE) Orientation
Because some students are unable to attend an orientation session during the summer, New Student Programs and the staff of the AU Freshman Service Experience (FSE) have designed a program that will help get you settled before classes begin.
During this orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet new students, get your student ID, take your math placement exam, meet with your academic advisor, confirm your class schedule, purchase your books, and more. You will be finished with the program in time to attend FSE Opening Ceremonies at 4:00 p.m. To attend this orientation program, you will need to:
- Move into your residence hall room no later than Sunday, August 16. You will be able to pick up your room keys at the front desk of your residence hall.
- Check in to both the orientation program and FSE between 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. on Monday, August 17 in the Mary Graydon Center Lobby. You will receive your orientation materials and your FSE schedule, t-shirt, and name tag.
- Bring money for your lunch.
