Getting Ready

NSP - Getting Ready Transfer

Transfer Transitions is designed to welcome new transfer students to American University. During Transfer Transitions, you will learn about academics and campus life at American University, while meeting other new students, as well as current AU students, who will help you acclimate to the university. In addition to meeting with your advisor and finalizing your course schedule you will learn your way around campus, take necessary placement exams, receive your AU ID Card and much, much more. By the time you leave Transfer Transitions, you will be well on your way to success at AU!

Use the following checklist to get ready for Transfer Transitions!

1. Read the Transfer Transitions Information and Registration Brochure. A hard copy of this brochure will be sent to your home address beginning in mid-May on a rolling basis based on when the University receives your tuition deposit.

2. Note the date of Transfer Transitions.

  • Fall Session

Transfer students looking for a more traditional orientation experience can attend one of the six two-day orientation sessions offered for first year students in June and July. During the two-day program, students will be introduced to AU's distinctive services and resources, and have the opportunity for social networking. During the sessions offered in June and July, you will take the standard math placement exam, meet with an academic advisor, and receive a final class schedule in addition to participating in helpful student and staff led sessions. Please contact New Student Programs at 202.885.3371 or summit@american.edu if you are interested in participating in one of the six first year student orientation programs offered in June or July.

3. Register yourself and your family members on-line using your New Transfer Student Checklist on the my.american.edu web portal. Our registration site works best when using Internet Explorer. Remember that your Transfer Transitions registration is not confirmed unless you receive an e-mail confirmation to your AU e-mail address.

4. Plan your travel to and from Transfer Transitions. Our sample schedules should help you plan your arrival and departure times. More information regarding the schedules will be posted shortly. Please call us at 202-885-3303 if you have any questions.

Want to learn more about using Mass Transportation to get to Transfer Transitions? Click here to go to the WMATA website and navigate using the "Trip Planner" to American University and the Tenleytown Metro Station.

5. Reserve a hotel room. Students can choose to stay on campus during the July program. However, if you would rather stay in a hotel, here are your local area options.

6. Submit your photo for your AUID card. By using your my.american.edu web portal, you can submit your own photo for your AUID card, and when you arrive to campus in August you will pick up your AUID in the Housing and Dining office located in Anderson Hall.

7. Print out directions to campus. 8. Pack your bags! Here is a list of what you will need to bring with you for Transfer Transitions:
