Tau Sigma Transfer Honors Society
Tau Sigma is a national academic honor society for transfer students who achieve a GPA grater than or equal to 3.5 during their first semester at American University. Tau Sigma’s mission is to “recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.” The American University Tau Sigma Chapter was founded in 2012 thanks to a partnership between New Student Programs and the Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Studies Office to recognize the many outstanding transfer students that join AU’s community each year.
Membership Criteria
To be eligible for Tau Sigma, students must:
- be enrolled full-time at American University,
- transfer into AU with at least one full year of academic credits from their previous institution(s),
- and earn a first semester GPA grater than or equal to 3.5.
Accepting Membership to Tau Sigma
Membership to Tau Sigma is by invitation only. Students who meet the membership criteria will be sent an invitation to join Tau Sigma National Honor Society. Students interested in becoming Tau Sigma members must complete the membership form and return it as indicated in the invitation’s instructions. There is a one-time $45 membership fee. A limited number of fee waivers may be available based on demonstrated financial need. If students do not respond
to the initial invitation for membership, students are unable to join Tau Sigma at a later date.
American University Chapter Opportunities
Members of AU’S Tau Sigma Chapter have various leadership and scholarship opportunities available to them, including appointment as executive board officers. Elections are held as part of the spring induction process.
