Getting Ready for January Orientation January 8 - 9, 2009
|
Congratulations on your acceptance to American University! Attending January Orientation will allow you to learn a great deal of useful information about American University and will give you an opportunity to meet other new students. This orientation program is for new students who will begin classes in January.
Use the below checklist to get ready for January Orientation!
Read
the Invitation letter that is mailed to the home address of new students
beginning in mid October.

Register yourself and your family members on-line using your New Student Checklist on the my.american.edu web portal. Our registration site works best when using Internet Explorer. Remember that your NSO registration is not confirmed unless you receive an email confirmation to your AU email address.

Orientation Schedule. A final schedule will
be distributed at check-in on Thursday.
Reserve a hotel room.
This option is for parents and family members as well as students
who do not have on campus housing.
Submit your photo for
your AUID card.
By using your my.american.edu web portal,
you can submit your own photo for your AUID card.
Print out directions
to campus and campus
maps.
Email us at orientation@american.edu
at least 48 hours in advance if you have any cancellations or changes to your
registration.

Check-in with our orientation staff and receive important information
about the January Orientation program, an updated schedule, meal tickets,
and your student handbook.
University Welcome
Hear from our Dean of Students and Director of New Student Programs
as we officially welcome you to AU!
Small Group Meetings (Students)
Get to know other students new to American
University while participating in small group activities.
Transitions (Parents and Family Members)
Join Dr. Faith Leonard, Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, for
a session on your student’s transition to college.
Math Placement Exam (Students Only)
All new students are required to take the
math placement exam regardless of AP course completion or choice of major.
The results determine your course placement in mathematics. You will not be
permitted to use a calculator during the exam.
Parent and Family Question and Answer Session
Join representatives from the Dean of Students Office,
Housing and Dining Programs, Information Technology, Multicultural Affairs,
International Student and Scholar Services, and current AU students during
this informational question and answer session.
Navigating AU (All)
This session will offer you a comprehensive
overview of AU's technology environment.
Housing Information Sessions
Join representatives from Housing and Dining
to discuss your specific housing arrangements while attending AU. Please attend
the session most applicable to you.
First Year Students and Families
Transfer Students and Families (On Campus OR Off Campus)
Dinner on your own with Orientation Staff
(optional)
Night in Dupont Circle
Interested in a late night treat? Join our
New Student Programs Coordinators for S'mores at Cosi and a trip to the popular
Kramerbooks. Meet at the north side AU Shuttle stop just outside of Hughes
Hall by 7:30 p.m. You'll want to bring your own spending money.

Academic Transitions (All)
Hear from one of our esteemed faculty members
about what it is like to be a college student at AU.
Academic Meetings
All students are
required to attend their Academic Meeting. During this time, you will have
the chance to meet with your advisor, meet other students in your school/college,
and review or make changes to your schedule. Please see below the location
of your meeting:

Career Center Information Session
Join us for an energetic overview of all our
great Career Center has to offer. The Center is NOT for seniors only! Career
Center staff want students to use the Center's variety of services and programs
throughout their years at AU. Internships, merit awards, career advising,
employer contacts – and more - will be covered.
Student Health Center
Join our Director of the Student Health Center
to learn about the services offered, access, immunization requirements, health
insurance, and local resources.
Resource Fair
Meet representatives from various university
offices, student groups and campus vendors. A complete list of participants
is located in your folder and at the Mary Graydon Center Information Desk.
Closing
Now that your January Orientation experience
has come to an end and you are an official Eagle, don’t forget to tell
us what you thought! Closing remarks will be offered and evaluations will
be distributed.
