The ASC also offers support services and help with accommodations for students with learning disabilities and ADHD

Housed in the Sports Center, the Jacobs Fitness Center provides health and fitness services for the AU community, including a variety of group exercise classes.
Membership includes use of the exercise facility, the Reeves Aquatic Center pools, the Bender Arena basketball courts, and outdoor track and tennis courts. The intramural program offers a wide range of sports in men’s, women’s, and co-recreational divisions.

The Career Center offers career advising; internship and job search preparation; self-assessment instruments and interpretations; a career resource library and computer lab; on-line postings of internships and jobs; graduate school advising; preparation and advising for merit awards and fellowships; employer panels; job fairs; on-campus recruiting; résumé referral; alumni career networking; and off-campus federal work-study positions. The center houses the Office of Merit Awards and the off-campus federal work-study (FWS) program,
providing FWS positions at sites throughout the city.

The Community Service Center connects students to volunteer and service-learning opportunities in the Washington, D.C., community and beyond. Programs include the Freshman Service Experience (FSE), DC Reads tutoring, the Community Service Learning Program (CSLP), the Eagle Endowment for Public and
Community Service, and a community service floor in Letts Hall.

The Counseling Center offers individual and group counseling, consultations, self-help resources, and workshops (on topics such as stress and anxiety, depression, relationsihp issues, culture shock, eating and body-image concerns, and alcohol and drug use). Assistance obtaining off-campus mental health care is provided as needed.

International Student Services provides cross-cultural advising and programming for all students in addition to specialized immigration support services for international students and exchange visitors. It administers the F-1 Non-Immigrant Academic and Language Student Programs and the J-1 Exchange Visitors Program.

Judicial Affairs oversees the work of the student judicial system, which adjudicates violations of the Student Conduct Code through disciplinary conferences and hearings before the Conduct Council. AU Mediation Services teaches alternative conflict resolution and management skills.

At the Kay Spiritual Life Center, chaplains from diverse faith traditions provide opportunities for prayer and worship and are available for programming,
counseling, and guidance on issues of faith and ethics. The center also schedules programs that explore the moral and ethical dimensions of current social, economic, and political issues affecting the nation and the world.

Multicultural Affairs advocates for an inclusive campus environment that values a pluralistic perspective. The staff provides academic support for ethnic minority students and educational programming and resources for all. It promotes diverse cultural interests through lectures, seminars, historical tours, receptions, award ceremonies, and festivals.

New Student Programs designs and coordinates programs for first-year, transfer, and graduate students and works with International Student Services to plan a fall orientation program for international and domestic freshmen unable to attend a summer orientation.

The Office of the Registrar provides services to students and faculty in all aspects of academic administration, including registration, grade reporting, degree audit, student evaluation of teaching, enrollment verification, and official transcripts. Most of these services are also available to students on the my.american.edu portal. Information on academic regulations, the schedule of classes, and the academic calendar are available on the Web, and program requirements are published in the university catalog.

Operating 24 hours a day, university police are commissioned law enforcement officers of the District of Columbia and have full investigative and arrest authority on university property. Officers check in at residence hall front desks but do not
routinely patrol the buildings unless requested to do so. Safety escorts are provided at night or by special request for individuals on campus by calling x2527. Officers respond to all reports of crime, fire, and medical or other emergencies and
coordinate with the D.C. fire and police departments.

Most financial transactions between the student and the university are billed through
Student Accounts. Students can view their financial transactions on their Web portal at my.american.edu. Returned checks, delinquent accounts, and information regarding financial stops are handled by Credit and Collections (x3569 and

The Student Activities staff serve as advisors, mentors, and facilitators to the student leaders and members of more than 160 registered clubs and organizations,
student government departments, and student media organizations. Student Activities provides information on how to get involved on campus and empowers students with the tools they need to be successful student leaders.

The Student Health Center staff provides outpatient medical care, including treatment of minor emergencies, acute illness, routine and annual gynecological care, immunizations, and allergy injections. Professional and peer health educators offer programs to teach students how to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles. The Student Health Center also coordinates the Student Health Insurance Plan and the Tuition Refund Insurance Plan, and oversees compliance with D.C. immunization requirements.

The University Library has nearly one million volumes; 3,000 journal subscriptions; 44,000 media titles; and 110 electronic databases with thousands of online journals. Library services, collections, and study facilities are located in Bender Library, the Music Library int he Katzen Arts Center, and the Anderson Computing Complex. Adaptive technology and assistance are available to students may borrow materials from other members of the Washington Research Library Consortium and use a research chat service.
