Welcome Week is designated as the official period to welcome American University's new students to campus. This transition period provides a valuable opportunity for the building of the AU community by bringing together new students on campus. It is a time to encourage student involvement, boost school spirit, and create life-long memories. The week is packed with plenty of fun events from convocation, to Explore DC, to bingo, to free movies, to outdoor activities, and classroom tours. There's something for everyone during this incredible week!
There are a number of programs for different student types happening throughout Welcome Week. Make sure to sign up for one before spots fill!
August Eagle Summit, American University's new student orientation held during Welcome Week, is designed to welcome new families and students to American University. During the program, you will learn more about academics and campus life at AU, while meeting other new students as well as current AU student leaders who will help you acclimate to the campus. In addition to meeting with your academic school and advisor, you will learn your way around campus and our community so that you are prepared for the rest of Welcome Week and the school year!
Explore DC (EDC) is a two-day program for incoming first-year and transfer students at American University. It’s part of AU’s Welcome Week programming, co-sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement & Service and the Office of Orientation, Transition, and Retention. Explore DC gives new students a chance to acclimate to their new city through logistical issues like transportation and food, to learn a bit about the city works by exploring the burning issues faced by community members, and to be exposed to some of the cultural and historical resources that exist.
